Suppose you are playing an RPG, and said RPG has a combat log, in which events that happen during battle are displayed. You are in a middle of a fight with a dragon, and you notice one line on the combat log:

"The dragon slams it's tail into the ground."

Does seeing this line bother you, and does it ruin the immersion or otherwise affect your enjoyment of the game?
Why would a line like this be a problem? I'm assuming because a dragon slamming it's tail against the ground causing your character/party to be stunned is a little cliche?

Because the usual mistake (that you also make in your post) in "its" and "it's".

Same with things like "loose" and "lose". Probably the most frequent mistake I see people make in english.

And on topic, no this doesn't bother me. What bothers me is internet using things like "should of" instead "should have" and similar nonsense hybridizations.

Jeez, if petty things like this bother you, then please go speak to Fairfox. She'll make your fragile mind explode

Edit: And your title Doomed Space Marine is wrong. The S and the M shouldn't be capitalized because Doomed Space Marine isn't a proper noun.

Sounds like your truck have started to move.

I hope you don't feel asleep.

As I have exactly written in my previous post, NO, misspellings do not bother me. I just pointed it out in this case because you asked what was wrong with it.

As long as the misspelling isn't detrimental to the understanding of the point one tries to make, or changes the meaning of the sentence it does not matter.

People read combat logs? I find them rather distracting.

Oddeus: People read combat logs? I find them rather distracting.
I'm used to games where the combat log is the primary, or in some cases, sole, piece of information about what's happening (see, for example, classic Wizardry and Bard's Tale).

In any case, such a mistake could occur anywhere that there's text in the game, including system messages and story dialog.
No, for at least three reasons:

- I'm not that immersed in the first place. Looking at a small screen, the rest of my peripheral vision makes it obvious I'm not 'in' the game. Especially if it uses a view other than first person. Plus background noise, etc.

- I'm capable of seeing that misplaced ' and understanding the intent without stumbling over it. I get it, but I've seen it enough times (and done it myself, I'm sure) that it's not a show-stopper.

- The rest of the text adds immersion, and isn't much different than a tabletop DM making a similar statement in a game.

For an obsessive pedant, I suppose it could be a problem.

Yes. I hate bad grammer. ;)

The combat log itself has ruined proper immersion already. Trite entries only add the the problem.
Not really. English consists of mostly made up rules in the first place, and whichever idiot decided that its is the possessive and it's is the contraction should be slapped.

I'd probably just copyedit the log to remove it entirely, and write a more fanciful line.
Absolutely, those mistakes are the worst. I expect writers to actually know the language they are working with.
Combat logs in and of themselves are not a thing I bother with in the games I play, and I don't play games where they are the main form of conveying what happened.

But as for bad grammar in general, something on the character level like "it's", I probably wouldn't even notice. Something like the "should of" I saw I'd notice and it would cause me to question the quality of the game, but I'm not sure it'd ruin immersion otherwise. Thankfully, I've not played any game that "should of"d me yet.
