This is really starting to get on my nerves, although it's been a staple of stealth in games for a long time. The "crouch walk is silent" mechanic. Ok, I'm not exactly a ninja, but I really don't thing crouch walking is any more silent than a normal "silent" walk. In fact, it's probably harder to be silent while crouch walking. I really don't get why games do that. Moving slowly to be silent - sure. But why the crouch? I just feel so silly sometimes, zig-zagging around crouching like a crazy person who is trying to look stealthy more than actually be stealthy.

I know, it's nitpick, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but come on. Am I wrong? I mean, pretty all games do that, so maybe I'm the dumbass?
I completely agree, the crouch walk and the unexplicable double jump are two of my major gripes in gaming.
Crouch walking might be okay if you're a crab, but not for human beings.

Oh, I completely forgot to say that these movements strain your knees way too much. Oh well, there's worse things in gaming. :P

There is a practical game reason, it visually shows you in stealth mode, so people know they are sneaking. Also of course you got to move slower in stealth, and crouching would require you to move slower.

There is a real life reason that if you're lower down, someone might not notice your head.
Yeah, especially since it'd actually make you more conspicuous.
This hits me at times as well, so I wouldn't say you're wrong. Just recently I was playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly as a merc traversing Pripyat. Tricky thing to do, especially if you're not familiar with the layout and points of transitions. So I notice a Monolith guarding the road near one of their buildings and I reason with myself it's time to move in for an easy takedown instead of raising hell by alerting the others.
So there I was, crouching, getting closer and thinking "this sectarian must be hearing impaired or something". I have to mention I had a companion as well.
Simply put, it doesn't make much sense. Your point is valid.

This is actually somewhat sensible, but only for third person games. And the silent crouch walk is just as persent in first person games. Not to mention, it would be easy to ahve some other visual stealth indicator that's not quite so silly. Something non-diagetic, like have the character turn black and white for example.

If realism is your thing, maybe you should try this cool game called Real Life? Totally immersive and totally realistic. You'll love it! lol
I always thought it's about being smaller hence harder to see.
All I can honestly say is that if i try and crouch, I will involuntarily grunt from the arthritis. If I try to walk like that, I'll need a few days in bed - more likely an ambulance.
But... give me a pair of slip-on Sketchers and the opportunity to walk upright and yer all dead meat!

patrikc: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly
The stealth in that series has always been itchy (especially on a reload, when they all detect you), but specific to that standalone mod, its an entirely new (and as mentioned in the options) unstable feature.

I do not think it belongs here.

Stealth is about not being seen. Crouching is one method for this, as is sticking to shadows, obstructing line of sight, camouflage. It is however a game and needs to blend some reality with speeding gameplay up, otherwise AC would take 30years to complete.

Same with double jump, it’s just a mechanic. You wouldn’t be able to cut your way through armies either and it’s amazing how your mount always appears to be five yards behind you when you whistle...

What game are you talking about, CP2077? There'sa dedicated forum for that, but you might have better response from devs at https://forums.cdprojektred.com/index.php?forums/gameplay.10794728/
Nobody from CDPR seems to come here.

Stealth involves a fair bit more than silence, there are a whole lot more factors involved for example profile, silouhette, shadow etc.

Add these to a necessary game mechanic and it makes sense, especially in mutilplayer as usually there must be a trade off for moving around a map in a quick manner.

Just watch a cat. They will sneak with their bellies on the ground even though it reduces their movement.

It's not always about not being seen. When it's about hiding, sure, then crouch if it will help. Though even then crouching will only help in some circoumstances. But crouching has nothing to do with silence. And if I'm sneaking up on someone, it's not about not being seen - the guy has his back to me. It's just about not being heard. And attacking someone from behind and taking them out fast is probably much easier if you're standing up, rather than crouching.

No, just games in general. It's a very common mechanic. I have not played Cyberpunk and have intention of doing so, at least not for a long, long time.

No, I know. But it’s trying to simulate something with certain mechanics. To be fair nobody can cut through armies either.
