Way back in the old days, original pre realm merged level 60 World of Warcraft- Oceanic Khazgoroth server. We all knew each other, even the Horde and Alliance. We had a code of honor in the battlegrounds that most regulars adhered to, and after really good battles we'd log into our alt characters and talk about what happened with the "enemy". And it was multiplayer where we actually had fun because the two sides actually knew each other to some degree and had some respect.

Then the realms merged and everything dropped to the lowest common denominator and it was never the same again.

Starmaker: The pre-2007 Wizards of the Coast forums. Not the community itself (it sucked even back then) but the community content WotC killed.

Nah, the D&D part. I keep telling myself I wouldn't want to go there these days if it still existed, but really, I used to be a massive D&D fan and wizards dot com was the first website I ever visited, so I'm still sad regardless.
interplay forums. they were a really interesting place to be in, with so many people knowing baldur's gate games by heart. they used to quizz one another all the time! spelling mistakes on dragon names were a big no-no.
