Less funny: the endin of Divinity 2, Ego Draconis was basically one big "f* you for playing this game!" ... it was somewhat salvaged in the DLC, but without that DLC it remains one big, mean trolling of all players.

Spoiler regarding the solution of one particular puzzle.


So, that jerk of a character, Rufus, walks into an alley from a plaza. Music can be heard coming from said plaza. In the alley, there´s a door Rufus has to knock in a very particular manner, a secret code, so that he is allowed to get in the house. But there´s a problem, Rufus cannot focus due to the music and can´t knock the door right. The solution? Well, it isn´t to go to the plaza and do something about said music. The solution is to press de ESC button, go to the options menu of the game, sound, and slide the music bar to the minimum (0).

Yes, that´s it. And yes, apparently, the game creators are as big jerks as Rufus is. :D

Legendary... and also how they picked that up in Zak McKracken. You find chainsaw fuel (on Mars!) and try to pick it up: "That is for another game". I almost died laughing.

That's indeed an outlier among the puzzles as I think otherwise Deponia (at least games 1-3) did not really involve fourth-wall breaking as a part of the plot.

I'd have to go with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, as the entire game from start to finish is practically one big long troll, parodying TV, movie, and game tropes from the 1980s and 90s, doing all kinds of annoying things games did back then and over the years to both poke fun at it and to troll you at the same time. It trolls hard right from the start too.

It has a helicopter mission early that you are supposed to shoot a high caliber mounted gun at enemies with but they set the mouse sensitivity so low that you have to move the mouse like 20cm just to move it 1cm on screen. It has a help system that irritatingly teaches you what every single key on the keyboard does like you've never ever played a game before, and in the most condescending way possible. It's just one thing after another like that. :)

That´s not fourth-wall breaking. That´s fourth-wall bombing. Yes, is the only such thing in the series. In fact, is the only such thing in my 20 years of pcgaming. :D

Now I´m not sure but there might be some fourth-wall breaking in the fourth game regarding the ending of the third. I don´t remember it well, that fourth game is a little bit convoluted. Just a little bit.

The Psycho Mantis fight in Metal Gear Solid is trolling at its finest.

Doesn't really change the fact that D3 really does have an awful cartoony artstyle which most Blizz fans disliked.

Well many blizz fans also eat up near anything blizzard does, so I tend to take their likes/dislike with a granule of sodium chloride.

Me? I like the art style, the gameplay(minus things like some bosses and the high health of the random elite level monsters), the companions, etc.

Ghosts´n´Goblins has a reputation for its difficulty. Additionally, after defeating the final boss, the player is forced to play replay entire game from the beginning.

Attacking chickens in Zelda games will spawn a often invincible flock to attack Link.

From XCOM: Enemy Unknown: "Is this what aliens do for fun? At least they are not playing... computer games."

That said, it reminds me of Tower of the Sorcerer....similar thing in that if you beat it the game makes you beat it again to win.

strategy games where the ai has unlimited or near unlimited resources
those make many strategies pointless , why raid its resource centers when it will get free units next turn anyway

The original Bard's Tale has an intentional softlock in it.

In Dragon Quest 1, the final boss will, before the actual fight, ask if you want to join him, and the default choice, I believe, is "Yes". What happens next is version dependent:
* In the Famicom version, the game gives you a password and softlocks. If you use the password to resume your game, apparently it takes you back to the start, but with worse stats.
* In the NES version, the game just softlocks without saving. (This is worse than a death because, if you die, you can continue minus half your gold (but keeping XP you earned, which is more important at this point because once you have the Silver Shield, there's nothing more to buy).
* For the remakes, the developers decided that doing this wasn't really fair, so instead you wake up at the inn of one of the towns, with the innkeeper saying something to the effect of you not sleeping well.

There's some trolling later in the series as well. DQ2 has the fake final castle where any rest and healing you get isn't saved when you leave or dispel the illusion, DQ4 has a shop that lies about what's for sale, DQ7 has a big troll when you finally reach Dharma Temple, and I hear DQ11 trolls with a fake casino.
