Hello, I know a lot of you use GOG to play old games that were a staple of many of our youths, and while I too still get fun out of the fallout's I'm looking for something more modern and accessible while being retro enough to run on my integrated graphics chip (intel x3100). I know I could just play newer games on lowered graphics settings, but the new wave of PC games isn't much to my liking anyways. So what I'm asking I guess is are there any games I haven't played already on GOG that would be fun to experience for the first time in 2009. Bonus points if there's an active modding community that helps bridge the gap between past and present, such as 1.13 with Jagged Alliance 2.
Along with JA 2 the kind of GOG games that have met that criterion I described would be Duke Nukem which still has great gameplay, a huge modding community and even a decent multiplayer population. Beyond that there's freespace 1 and 2 which have since had their engines upgraded, but other than those 4 I'm kind of blanking out, so if anyone could help and share their 2 cents that'd be cool.
I'm thinking of trying either of the strongholds, as I really like strategy games. Along these parts I've also heard a lot of praise for The Guild, is that justified?

Well if you're after mods and you like flight games, Freespace 2 is an obvious choice and it definitely stands up well to modern inspection when you install the FS2Open mod
Broken sword II
i have no nostalgic feelings for it whatsover (played a demo a bit) and it is a great game
and yes
praising for the guild IS justified. go for it. you shall not regret it!
I only recently picked up The Guild myself a week or so ago and having never played it before it really is holding up well to modern games. I would say it actually has alot more depth then the majority of games being released today.
Evil Genius is another stratergy I have been having a good deal of fun with. If you ever played the Dungeon Keeper games and enjoyed those this is a must have game.
The Guild is very good. There's a lot to it I've yet to get around to playing.
I'm quite enjoying Capitalism Plus, I don't have much business sense but it's been accessible enough for me to learn in a day or three. Not sure how modifiable if at all it is, and it's a different type of strategy than usual.
The Guild is a very good choice and not because I am totally biased towards it or anything of that nature....

descent with d2x rebirth graphics mod
broken sword
Pretty much any of the adventure games hold up well, especially the ones with beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds. The gameplay is still archaic, but if you manage to look past that there's a hell of a lot of charm.
Man this thread reminds me how much I wish GOG had X-COM: UFO Defense and Heroes of Might and Magic 2. I dunno about mods and communities for them, though. But X-COM does have some versions people have put together on their own in an attempt to carry on the tradition, and some are supposedly quite good and can even be played multiplayer.

None of the following are on GOG, unfortunately.
I'd say Outcast, because it was waaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time.
UFO: Enemy Unknown/X-COM: UFO Defense is also among the best of its kind even to this day.
King's Bounty: The Legend is a remake of an ancient game, so it's fairly retro. Not sure about the system requirements.
Bionic Commando: Rearmed is a somewhat improved NES game from 88 with a brand new presentation. It's excellent, but requires a shader model 3.0, so you might be out of luck.

Not GoG but, http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/. Unlike other steam games it uses dosbox and is NOT tied to steam if you just click the .bat files yourself.
Yep, the re-issued X-Com library are available on Steam or on Gamersgate. They run in a pre-set DosBox shell, and they work in XP/Vista.

Wasn't just NES, the best version was on the C64!
That said, as much as the modern version is pretty and fancier, it still suffers from the flawed game design philosophy the original had, being a direct descendant of the coin vaccuum arcade machine where fun was equal to killing you regularly so you'd put more money in the machine

And because of that, there is practically no DRM on them, so you can extract them out of the Steam folder at least. Same with Doom, Heretic and Hexen on Steam.
played Hostile Waters for the first time on GOG last year and loved it. Don't know of any community or mods though.
I think there are Descent mods to boost the graphics, but it haven't tried em. It aint so new, but the gameplay should hold up. (edit: see someone already mentioned that)
Ground Control should also hold up well, and look pretty good. though i got annoyed by the lack of in-mission saves. Other than that it's an awesome game.
Personally I'm waiting for the Mechwarrior4 re-release.
