I've only really played part 3 which I played a lot, and actually still play. I didn't get the first 1 when it came out because I though I would be let down after playing 3 so much, but since some people hear like 2 as much as 3 or better I think i will give this one a try too.

You're right! I've enjoyed every single HoMM game, because each one brings new ideas, not revolutionary ones, but enough to change a little bit the gameplay and to renew the interest in the game. And frankly, I'm happy when there are good graphisms, but if the game is ugly but excellent, i still play it! So even if HoMM or HoMM II are far for the standards of games these days, i still play them with a lot of pleasure.

stonebro: If HoMM1 was the first insecure steps, HoMM2 had learned to walk and run, and HoMM3 won the olympic gold medal in marathon.

Actually, King's Bounty was the babysteps :) No castle building in that one, but the combat and map travel is there
Thanks for this! GOG is all impulse shopping for me and HOMM2 was one of those "MUSTBUYNOW!" impulses :)
I had this on Mac OS 7 so needless to say I needed a new copy. The DOSbox works great as usual.
Necromancers for life!
