(Yes the title is a joke damnit)
http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/08/12/gamer-imagery-used-campaign-discourage-quotgayquot-insult
Whilst I absolutely support the rights of the LGBT community, there's got to be a point where they toughen the fuck up, get a thicker skin, call the people who insult them idiots and then get on with their lives.
I've been discriminated against for various reasons through my life and the one thing I've learned is that if you don't respond in just that way, you give far too much value to the opinions of idiots and you can forget just how great you are. In effect you HELP the idiots win.
I smell a flame war. =)
But this is a problem. I can't tell you how many times friends have to come to me for help when they felt that way. Empathy is both a blessing and a curse.
This ad campaign is gay. ;) Its message makes no sense whatsoever; it's infinitely easier to collect games than it is to form friendships. Also, with an ever-increasing number of people actively gaming (even if it's just Peggle and The Sims), implying that gamers have no friends is a rather strange claim.
"Think that's mean?", the small text says. No I don't, I think it's stupid; this campaign won't achieve any good. While the gamer example is just downright moronic (or gay, if you prefer), the jock and cheerleader posters are based off sound logic and could genuinely hurt some people. Two wrongs don't make a right; using a hateful stereotype to argue against another hateful stereotype is the worst idea ever.
Rather than fighting an uphill battle for acceptance and begging like children for people to stop name-calling, homosexuals should stop acting like what they do in bed is the number one defining characteristic of who they are as a person. I don't run down the street shouting "look at me! I like women! I like women SOOO MUCH! I could think about naked women all day long, oh yeah!", but that's exactly what these homosexual movements are doing, figuratively speaking.

that was...so...gay.
Damn queers...
@Arkose, that's exactly what my school does and I hate them for it. It seems that just because they're different, they feel as if they need to advertise that difference to everyone until everyone is desensitized and completely numb to it for them to feel better.
J******s
Why insult someone with a single word when you can instead call them a "Puss filled festering wound on the sphincter of society!"
So much more effective than questioning their sexuality (which tends to only work on the teen and early 20's male crowd anyways). ^_^

You're quite wrong there. That's a huge generalization concerning what gay people are about and what some of the gay movements strive for.
People who are accepted for what they are don't have to raise awareness to point out why and how they're being discriminated so there goes all the meaning out of your little stroll down the street shouting how much you like women because you don't ever have to take any shit from anyone for being straight.
I have a few gay friends (both men and women) and some of them have been my friends for more than 15 years now, and that kind of gives me a good insight on the kind of shit they have to deal with on a daily basis, even in a fairly open minded country such as mine.

Collecting games it's easyer than making friends. How is that implying that gamers have no friends ?
The sentence on the add works for me. I'm a gamer guy with alot more games than friends even if i have no shortage of friends.
As for the add, it's beyond me how anyone can place such value on words when they're obviously devoided of any negative conotation.
It seems to me that gay people who take issue with this kind of thing are in for a very rough time.

I'm assuming most of us here have been called a geek, nerd, propellerhead, etc.
We all deal with persecution on some level and at various points in our life. As a fellow propellerhead, I cop it daily...
HARDEN THE FUCK UP!!!
That's so "underpants guy who has more underpants than friends."
You could replace "gamer" and "videogames" with almost anything and it would be true.
I like my games. I don't need their gay friends.
How many friends do people have? I mean REAL friends, the ones who are always there for you and go to any insane lengths to cheer you up when you're down?
For me, I have 5. Quantity isn't the same as quality, these people shouldn't listen to stalin so much
The gamer poster seems to be playing to the stereotype of the pathetic jaded sociopathic mysanthrope who can only achieve gratification through games. As a near avatar of that stereotype I should be offended but I'm not. I gave a quick snort of derision, said "morons" and got on with my life, now it doesn't matter to me.
The whole thing is a pretty simple "Well how would you feel if the negative stereotypes about your broad category were thrown around as negatives" kind of psychology. It lacks tact and subtlety but then so do the target demographic so I suppose fair is fair. Shame it's more likely to just change the insult from "fucking fags" to "fucking WHINY fags". Intellectually inferior people are irrelevant, ignore them and life is vastly better

Whenever I'm called a geek I reply "indeed, and a proud one at that."
Can' see this really having an effect to be honest. And I agree with other posters on the negative stereotype to stop a negative stereotype is not a good choice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a proud propellerhead and don't mind telling people so, but it wasn't always the case... I had to harden up too!!!
I was already let off at the campaign name: ThinkB4YouSpeak. Its like they threw professionalisme out the window. This title is shortened in a way that we use in SMS and chats. Not proffesional campaigns made by officals. Also the tekst itself is more provoking than intellectiual. I for one thinks that this will only create more "hate".
Saying FAG is no longer associated with a Homosexual person, but some idiot in their mothers basement being a total douchebag! But seen from a outside perspective (i.e. Politicians, parent and other authorities). FAG seems like hate towards gay people.
Correct me if mistaken but i have yet to experience sexuality playing ANY role when gaming. Unless youre a woman... get back to the kitchen D:<
(its a joke)
