Gothic Games, Painkiller, Aquanox 1 and 2, and more great games 60% off this weekend in our Nordic Nights Promo!

Nordic Nights. They're kind of like nights elsewhere, except for the fact that they don't end for a few months. And the cold. The biting cold that wants to inveigle itself in every crevice, slowly leaching out all heat. Nordic Nights scoff at Polar Vortexes. They hunt Polar Vortexes for their prized blubber and fur. No, wait. That's Polar bears. Our bad.

Regardless, we have great games from Nordic Games, who are going through their long Nordic Night right now, for you to enjoy. Check out our Nordic Nights weekend promo for a variety of top deals. The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief, The Gothic Series, Panzer Elite, Painkiller Black, Aquanox 1 and 2, and more fantastic games from one of our favorite developers of the far North are all available for 60% off!

If you're looking for something to do to keep yourself amused during your own long, cold winter nights, you'd be hard pressed to make a better choice than getting one of these games. Believe us, these guys know what it takes to chase away cabin feverI
I don't know if this has been posted before, but I've found something.

Pica-Ludica: Before coming here, I wasn't even aware of the Gothic series. But from what I have gathered so far, its seems like a very solid RPG with a big world and compelling mechanics.

However, I'm really not sold on the fact that you play as a fixed character. I tolerate this in J-RPGs because they have a different approach and style. But in western RPGs I like to make my own character, to actually role-play. I know this sounds like a rather superficial nitpick, but I prefer to play as a female character for instance. Sue me. :p

So! My question is: how does the main character hold up personality-wise, and how's the overall story in the Gothic series? If I'm going to spend many hours with a pre-established character, I'd like him not to be a bland white male everyman (*cough*Desmond Miles*cough*), and I'd like him to have a compelling backstory and motivations.

I can of course watch a let's play video or two, but you can only get so much from those while avoiding spoilers, and I'd really prefer the opinion of someone who enjoyed the games in their entirety. :)

Oh, and another question: do you have to play all the Gothic games, story-wise, or are they stand-alone? If the latter, which would you recommend first?

Thanks in advance!
The main character of the gothic series, jokes a lot, has a problem with any form of authority, solves most problems with violence and was therefore the ideal candidate for the rough environment of the prison colony (Gothic 1), for fighting the dragon menace (Gothic 2) or the civil war (Gothic 3). He may not be a Adam Jensen or a Solid Snake but he is far more sympathic than Desmond Miles.

I would suggest to first play Gothic 1 (even if the graphics are dated and the controls are strange), then Gothic 2 (a little prettier than Gothic 1 graphic-wise, same Gameplay) and Gothic 3 at last (which has less story and more fighting). Never buy or play Gothic 3 The Forsaken (Standalone-Addon which was developed by some Indian developers). My favorite part of the series is Gothic 1.

IAmSinistar: Oo, ta! Can pick up Spellforce 2 for my GOG shelf, even though I have them elsewhere. Same with Gothic 3. And will throw the first Desperados in there, it sounds quite good.

I believe I should pass on Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge and Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods from what I've read before, however. And it's a shame Chaser isn't better, it looks like it could be a fun Blood 2 styled romp otherwise. Silver is tempting, but I can only backlog so many RPGs these days before it hits a limit.
No no - there is no RPG limit! Get them all! Must make that there backlog the towering mountain it was meant to be!

With respect to the promo: Plenty of good games in the promo GOG. It is a good thing I got all the ones I personally already wanted at this point - more time for my wallet to recover from the abuse it received over the Christmas holiday. Am sorely tempted to pick up Covert Action and Silent Service 1 + 2, and maybe even FlatOut 2, but must wait just a little bit longer...

So far so good GOG - keep doing what you are doing, bringing the good games here.

***Edited for transition; did not think the forum would combine both my posts.

Melhelix: I'll second this question. Recommended order of play on the Gothic series, anyone?
I've only played the first one and the beginning of the second, so I can't say anything about Gothic 3, but Gothic 2 does built upon Gothic. The beginning of the sequel refers to the end of the first game and I expect some characters from Gothic to reappear in Gothic 2. It might not be necessary to play Gothic in order to enjoy Gothic 2, but I wouldn't recommend playing them in reverse order, as Gothic 2 might spoil the story of Gothic as well as spoil the players in terms of control (IIRC the first Gothic is keyboard only).

How is The Nations (aka Alien Nations 2)?
I was thinking of getting Spellforce 2 but I would just like to ask how is the RTS part. I've always prefered turn-based strategy to real-time even though I enjoyed games like warcraft 3. Is there a lot of micromanagement and how does your character fare during these instances (does he participate in the fights or give bonus/buffs to troops?)

You can roleplay just fine, I think. Yes, you are limited to this one character, but other than that you are quite free in you choices. Melee, ranged and Mage specialisations are possible and how you want to get along in the colony (which of the 3 factions you choose, killing/stealing, etc.) is not predetermined. This is true for Gothic 1 and mostly true for Gothic 2. I can't tell you anything about Gothic 3, however (other than the fact that you should install the community patch) as I have yet to play it.

And yes, definitely play the Gothic games in the correct order! You have a consistent story that way.

Ah, talking about it brings back fond memories of my childhood playing Gothic 1^^

Gothic 1 has mouse support, but you have to enable it in the options. If playing with a mouse, be sure to enable the alternate keyboard mapping.

True, but this characterization is very subtle. He is not the bland white male everyman, but he doesn't have much of a backstory either, IIRC not even a name. Not really like in JRPGs, and not much opportunity to roleplay his personality either. But you do have some relevant choices with regard to class build and factions, as final_options pointed out. And at least in Gothic 1 the setting does give the main character solid motivations. With regard to female characters though, the only ones encountered in Gothic 1 are basically silent slaves.

And he smokes a lot of this swamp-ganja... THAT must be the reason why some people needed nearly three years to play gothic 2 to the final... %-)

The Nordic promo is like the Nordic Nights: Keanetastic! :-)
I'm gonna take the first Desperados (since I played a demo, I've kept this in mind as better than Commandos and with this great western scenario) and Silver, which seems to be a little gem? It looks very charming. And maybe another game... umm.. what was it again... errrr... this damn tasty Sumpfkraut!
Thanks for all the advice everyone! In order it is. :D
Any release plans from THQ catalog? Nordic has important part of them.

Kabus: Any release plans from THQ catalog? Nordic has important part of them.
That's what I'm wondering. There's some former THQ games there that Nordic now holds that would be nice additions to the GOG catalog. ;)
I got the following this weekend:

Painkiller Black edition
Dark Fall: The Journal
Dark fall 2: Lights out
Desperados: Wanted dead or alive
Desperados 2: Cooper's revenge
Panzer Elite Special Edition
Alien Nations
Nations Gold Edition
