Synchronization of existing installer and bonus content files

>>>Scenario
An archive folder for GOG game installers & extras exists; content was downloaded with the GOG.com Downloader (e.g. Z:\GOG.com\the_witcher_3_wild_hunt)

After Galaxy has been installed, the root directory of the existing GOG installer archive (e.g. Z:\GOG.com\) is set in the Galaxy settings (Manage all folders manually => Download games/extras to => archive root)

>>>Feature
Galaxy should run a file size/checksum verification process, acknowledging and update pre-existing files; maybe after setting the archive root and rebooting the client.

>>>Reason
This would save a heck of a lot of bandwidth on both sides (GOG & customers/us)! :)
Content needn't be downloaded multiple times or even by accident.

At he moment such a feature seems not to be implemented, as far as my tests (see. Scenario) concluded.

Hopefully this sounds reasonable and not too far-fetched.

If you have any questions or feedback regarding this feature request, please, let me know and I'll be happy to answer/clarify things.

Cheers,
The Warrinator :)

PS: I hope this post turns out right (paragraphs etc.) since the preview suggests otherwise! :)

+1. I already have most of my games backed up. It would be nice if galaxy could scan the backup location and discover which are already present by using the installer exes'. Then be able to specify a backup location for each game so I can control the directory hierarchy. Also a visual indication of which games have backups would be nice as well.

Was just thinking this exact same thing. Making sure you have the latest versions of the installers and any extras, as it stands, is incredibly laborious. The only way to do it is to just manually go through every game in your library and re-download, just in case. At least we need some indication from the UI that the backup copy you have of "Game X" is out-of-date, and an option to automatically keep it in sync with the server.

This is so needed !
Just like in steam to be able to check verify the already files that are installed and not double download and save indeed,
definitly when changing OS we cant keep downloading everything again.

(ok sometimes even after verifyng in Steam the same install folder untouched only new OS it still does download like 6G from the 15-must be fixed too)

The GOG.com Downloader seems to check at least if the file already exists, so this seems like a step back currently.

I find this important, too .Right now , even if I have already downloaded a file through Galaxy, it redownloads the entire thing when I accidentally click it again.
It would be helpful if Galaxy checked the file beforehand (with a little more than a CRC check - there are better checksum algorithms available, and it's not like those take forever on a fairly modern System)

I didnt see this and already requested this feature, also its in Mantis with version updates checking status. I'll move my vote here, this is very well said!

CRC checks would be quick and easy with lite load and you can already have them done server side so the app could very quickly see if they are good with minimal overhead.

GOG closed my similar feature request on Mantis (https://mantis.gog.com/view.php?id=1376 ), so I'll vote this one too.

This feature would rock. I have my game install files on a NAS and only have 5-10 games installed at any one time, and it would be awesome if I could point GOG Galaxy at the containing folder an say - here's where you find installers for games. Here's where you should put any further installers for games, so that they are kept when I uninstall the game, and updated as needed if I would like to reinstall the game.

So much this. An option to install games from the existing backup would be cool too, intsead of installing and then adding the game folder in the Galaxy client.

Also, what Warryn said <3

The "deluxe" solution would be, if GOG could implement a way to incrementally update those vanilla(?) installer files, meaning that Galaxy only downloads and patches the delta (i.e. the newest/missing files) into those installer/extra files we already have on our systems.

On the other hand, I don't know if that's even possible without messing around with those installer packages, not breaking them.

Even if above said is not possible/feasible, the "jackhammer approach" would absolutely work for me: Downloading for example all the updated installer files, say over night or when it suits me (and my bandwidth) best, would always leave me with an up-to-date GOG repository at my disposal.

With such a feature implemented (either way) heaps of time, browsing/searching for updated game versions would be saved on our end.

GOG could hit two birds with one stone, I guess, because a competitive client should, no, must be able to auto-update games/content already installed (see Steam); at least when installed by the client itself.

Just some additional thoughts from me. :)

Cheers

I couldn't agree more. I have all of my GOG games backed up to an external hard drive, and it would be great to have those files auto-updated. As it is, I don't really have much use for the Galaxy client, since it doesn't seem to have any way to download the setup files or back up your games.

Hi carboxymoron! Thanks for your input. Actually I was referring to the "raw" content. This would sort of help to maintain an up-to-date installer/content repository, so to say.

Not sure about how good/bad importing and updating o currently installed games works, since I'm fairly new to the GOGunity. :) But it would be great if it did! So, valid point there.

Cheers,
Warryn

Hey, this doesn’t answer your request fully, but you can import existing games. Select a game in your Galaxy library, click More, and Import Folder.

I am not sure if it can import *installer* folders or only *installed* games. But it should at least help you get started without wasting too much bandwidth.
