I remember walking into a Blockbusters and seeing the cover art. I was immediately intrigued by it, being a mech lover at heart, after reading the back of it I immediately rented it for the weekend. Being able to build a mech, to then being able to *program* it, to then send that programmed mech to do battle. It was a childhood dream come true. After that weekend, I was completely hooked. I asked my parents to get it for me for my birthday. I have loved the game ever since, and I have told everyone I know that share similar interest as I about it. Please up vote this cult classic PS1 game so another generation of players gets to experience it.
A really fun idea, with a very complicated game mechanic. I once saw it described as "A game you need a PhD to play" - you will be hard pressed to find any video game with a more complex learning curve - you are a mech designer, you put a body arms and legs, engines targeting system all the sort of stuff you might know from a game like Armored Core. Difference? You don't control the mechs, you create a 'AI' for them by putting commands and behaviors into their available CPU slots, bigger CPU more complex your mechs AI can get. We are talking stuff like stay at range, move forward until you encounter a enemy it can hit, or if it encounters a wall, to turn and continue forward till it hits another wall, then turn left, or if the tech is unlocked , jump to try to go over the obstacle, ect ect....it gets WILD fast, the game had all the complexity of a tabletop with a playstation controler.
The programming genre is so so so niche, I think the time is ripe for a comeback. This complex system is what strategy gaming needs. I picked up this game much longer after release, and I'm glad I did. The gateway is Armored Core Formula Front (which I and you should vote on), but this represents the real meat of the genre.
