Chrono Cross (1999)

by Square Product Development Division 3, Square
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Turn-based strategy (TBS)
Themes:Open world, Fantasy
Game modes:Single player
Story:CHRONO CROSS, the sequel to the SNES favorite CHRONO TRIGGER, is one of the most ambitious role-playing games ever made. There are over 40 playable characters, each with their back-story, special moves, abilities, and weapons. The story spans two discs and follows the story of Serge, a young man who is able to cross dimensions. Suddenly he is pulled between worlds, trying to figure out his own past at the same time. The graphics are bright and beautiful, utilizing the PlayStation's capabilities to the fullest. The polygonal character models are huge and detailed, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are immaculately detailed. The music is composed and arranged by Yasunori Mitsuda, and features very realistic-sounding synthesizers. The battle system revolves around Elements, which are used to grant magical powers, as well as to summon huge monsters. For anyone that wanted to see the story of CHRONO TRIGGER continue, this is your chance.Show more

This was the very first game that made me so hooked up to the TV (I played on PSX back then) - and the very first one with so unique story of the game's protagonist. Combat system was somewhat tricky to understand and master, but after several hours of using it all was clear, fortunately. The best part of Chrono Cross was the story of every character in the game - and all the twists within the game's plot. A real rollercoaster of emotions I wont forget. I don't want to spoil anything to those, who didn't play the game yet, but there were at least 2 huge shocks for me when playing, and I was like "WTF!?". And the main reason for Chrono Cross to be on GOG is very simple: I think everyone should have the opportunity to play this masterpiece on PC now and in the foreseable future. Without the annoying Internet connection, without compatibility issues, and without being afraid of losing the access to the game. For me Chrono Cross is a real gem and a true masterpiece that I will always hold in my heart.

A magical, surreal Squaresoft rpg. Sequel to the acclaimed Chrono Trigger but with a host of new characters. And I really mean a host. There was a recent remaster. Very beautiful soundtrack. May take a few playthroughs to get what is happening because time travel and their consequences are a thing. Color perception may be pretty important.

Lost Odyssey
Lost OdysseyLost Odyssey is set in a world in which a "Magic-Industrial Revolution" is taking place. While magic energy existed in all living creatures beforehand, it suddenly became far more powerful thirty years before the beginning of the game. Because of this, it has affected society greatly, with devices called "Magic Engines" harnessing this power for lighting, automobiles, communication, and robots, among other uses. While previously only a select few could wield magic, many magicians gained the ability. However, such progress has also caused two nations to develop new and more powerful weapons of mass destruction. The kingdom of Gohtza and the Republic of Uhra (which recently converted from a monarchy). Uhra is building Grand Staff, a gigantic magic engine, while the heavily industrialized Gohtza actively pursues magic research of their own. A third nation, the Free Ocean State of Numara, remains isolated and neutral, though it is falling into disarray due to a general attempting to stage a coup d'etat. Uhra, at war with Khent, a nation of beastmen, sends its forces to the Highlands of Wohl for a decisive battle at the start of the game.

Hard Nova
Hard NovaHard Nova is a sci-fi role-playing game with space exploration, spaceship customization and combat, and trading elements, somewhat similar in concept to Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic. There is no character creation in the game: in the beginning the player selects between the female mercenary Nova and the male mercenary Stark. They have slightly different attributes and may gain access to different dialogue lines as the game advances. Most other crew members have to be recruited from within the game world. Three of them can be taken to locations on various planets, where they may interact with other characters and participate in combat, where only the leader is controlled manually. On-foot combat is done in real time, with delays caused by weapon properties and the characters' proficiencies. Guns play a prominent role in battles.

Drod 1+2+3
Drod 1+2+3Drod: King Dugan's Dungeon What happened to Beethro on his first excursion into King Dugan's Dungeon? Well, mainly it was just the usual dungeon exterminator's subterranean grind: killing off thousands of roaches, chopping through tar, guzzling mimic potions, and generally ridding the King's underground chambers of all that should not be there. But also Beethro met an unexpected enemy, created lifelong grudges against him, and learned secrets that would later motivate his journey to Rooted Hold. DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold Swordplay and puzzles combine in this thinking man's dungeon crawl. It's simple to learn, with just a handful of commands to master. But the unique gameplay provides an amazing depth. A detailed overhead view shows monsters, obstacles, and other game elements. You have as much time as you like to contemplate your next move. So this is a good game for relaxing, but also terrifically involving once you get started. You'll be hooked by the story of Beethro and his troublesome nephew, Halph. Our heroes set off on a harmless jaunt, but end up far below the surface, chased by a clownish madman. They begin to uncover a vast, underground bureaucracy, and things only get stranger the further they delve. You've got over 350 rooms ahead--each one a singular challenge for you to conquer. DROD: The City Beneath You begin as a rather ugly man named "Beethro" who travels deep beneath the ground. There are other people down there too, citizens of a mysterious "Rooted Empire", that are carving tunnels and building things. Beethro just wants to know why, but it's hard to get a useful answer. He was always fond of saying "there is no problem that can't be solved with a really big sword," but upon arriving at the underground capital, Beethro is startled to find that nobody seems interested in attacking him. No, for some reason, they would rather persuade him to stand in a very long line. 25 sprawling levels with over 350 custom designed rooms, including secret rooms. 17 types of monsters with greatly varying abilities and behavior. 11 different characters, some of which contribute to puzzles as well as story development.
