Enter the ID4 Alien invaders during the Flight Sim Revolution. Descent/Freespace, Homeworld had no box office representation or cult-classic status; Wing Commander, speaks for itself. 90s kids know this was the phenomenon that started it all. Even the VHS had a promo for this game. When it was new, jeez, the split-screen dogfights, the then-cutting-edge aircraft and the potential to truly duke it out with the baddies from the biggest box-office 90s grand slam unrivaled until the Phantom Menace and the Star Wars renaissance. Independence Day deserves more spotlight than its sequel film. Like Goldeneye, its true legacy isn't just a badass action film, it's in the long-overdue nostalgia for an epic sci-fi flight sim that needs to be shown to the next generation who grew up with CGI silver-spoons. In the 90s, this was how we got into flight sims. Even Rogue Squadron, splendid as it was, is still technically fantasy by comparison.
It was unforgettable because you had so many fighter jets to choose from and the cities were actually roughly modelled on true maps which was unique for it's time. It's 1 of the reasons why my profile name is inspired from your in-game call-sign. I played it with my brothers in head to head mode. It was fun and challenging because the cheats were a classic example of do almost anything you think you can do. My favorite part was to play as the alien attacker, turn on invincible shields and turn on friendly fire to attack human cities & buildings. I would like it on GOG since it would immortalize it and make it DRM Free unlike the other big guy. GOG please try to not use the DOSBOX emulation solution as it doesn't allow for the 3D Accelerated improved PC hardware graphics.
