by KD Vision, Codemasters
Genres:Strategy, Real Time Strategy (RTS)
Themes:Warfare
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:In the space of fifty years, Earth changed from a planet on cusp of a challenging future to a world a breath away from lifelessness and plunged into an apocalyptic time of ecological disaster, global warfare and the meltdown of human civilization. This is the time of the Maelstrom. In this ravaged world, the planet's dwindling resources have divided what remains of mankind in two: the urban freedom fighting 'Remnants' and the technologically advanced 'Ascension'. Now they must wage war against a new threat, the invasion of a savage alien race, the Hai-Genti, and each other in a desperate struggle for supremacy and survival. Through the game's missions, take command from different viewpoints and employ faction-specific tactics and weaponry to achieve your objectives. Complete with the ability to terraform landscapes and transform units, Maelstrom provides gamers with the power to harness the forces of nature in the most frantic, destructive, action-packed RTS game yet.Show more

I remember playing it as a kid at my classmate's place. From what I can recall it had incredible desolate vibe to it, and a cool alien faction that grew its buildings from the ground messing up the terrain all arround, or smth like that. Please bring it back, I've just discovered its been removed from steam by ea.
I actually still do have the physical disk, but it has problems due to adobe flash player, making me unable to actually install it. As such, it would be nice that the game was back in some way, shape or form. I do distinctly remember this game playing around a lot with terrain manipulation and even over the years I don't think theres been any other RTS that had anything similar. I also have vague memories of it being very clunky and awkward, even for the time, but thats part of the charm isn't it? It would be a shame if this game never got a chance to be preserved even with all it's issues, and I do think it's something worth trying out just due to the originality of it's ideas, even if the implementation is not very good.
I wishlisted this on Steam just a year or two ago, then I waited too long and they delisted it. Super annoying. I haven't played it yet, but the reviews seem to be fairly positive with most of the complaints being technical problems with an almost 20 year old game. That'd make it perfect for GoG.
I had wish listed this game in Steam but found out the game was removed at the time of writing this post. I had good memories playing this game as a kid making full use of the terrain manipulation system then flooding the whole map (or part of it?). I still remember this game had a third person view for one of the faction heroes which was impressive back then. I wish this game will be around for the future generations and maybe when I want to feel nostalgic, I will hop right back into the game whenever I want. It would be comforting for me and some other people to be able to access this game in the future, and be preserved due to its unique gameplay, and story.
