Muramasa: The Demon Blade (2009)

by Vanillaware, Ignition Entertainment, Marvelous Entertainment, Rising Star Games
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Hack and slash/Beat 'em up
Themes:Action, Fantasy, Historical
Game modes:Single player
Story:Based on ancient Japanese lore, Murumasa: The Demon Blade plunges players into the mystical Genroku era, ruled by the skilled shogun Tsunayoshi Tokogawa. But this culture is threatened; Tokugawa's thirst for power leads to a conflict over the enormously powerful, though cursed, Demon Blades. Used in hatred, drenched in blood, the cursed blades condemn those who use them to tragedy, madness, and untimely deaths. As chaos spreads, denizens from the netherworld breach their realm as these malevolent swords summon evil spirits -- and the Dragon and Demon Gods as well. Featuring hand-drawn 2D art reflecting the heritage and tone of the storyline, Muramasa: The Demon Blade transports players into a little known mythology, envisioned by the creators of the critically acclaimed Odin Sphere. Players take on the role of a male ninja or female kunoichi, utilizing their ninja prowess to traverse the clever side-scrolling levels that feature vertical progression as well as the traditional horizontal stage advancement.Show more

I loved this game on the wii and I want to share that experience with you guys. ALSO, THE GAME IS JUST BEAT UP MYTHS AND LEGENDS IN JAPAN.
The only 2D game on PS Vita worth buying imo. From the soundtrack that evoked feelings of eerie isolation that jumped to high tempo songs when encountering minibosses or mobs of enemies, I've never seen another 2D game that had such a strong atmosphere. Not to mention the art direction made every slash and telegraphed attack clear against the backdrop along with the upgrade system made grinding enemies for XP a breeze. Would replay 10/10
One of my FAVORITE Vanillaware games. It doesn't go on too long, is a rewarding storyline, and has an amazing art style! I loved every minute of it, and would love to play it with the DLC!
Muramasa was my introduction to Vanillaware games and holds a special place in my heart. There is technically an enhanced Vita port in the form of Muramasa: Rebirth, but I'm putting my experience here since this entry had more votes. I desperately want Vanillaware PC ports and honestly you can't go wrong with any of them, but I'd like to bring some older games forward first. Muramasa is stuck on the Wii and Vita.
Those games also need your vote!

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the KingThe video game adaption of the acclaimed film of the same name. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a follow up the well received adaption of the first two films in the trilogy. The game expands on what The Two Towers accomplished, with the action and adventure sequel introducing three separate story lines from the movie: one following Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, as The Two Towers did, another following Gandalf, and a third following Frodo and Sam, with Merry, Pippin, and Faramir serving as unlockable characters. Gameplay features were also expanded upon, including multiplayer.

Wild Arms 2
Wild Arms 2Wild Arms 2 is not a direct sequel to the first Wild Arms, although it is set in the same fictional world Filgaia, which combines elements of Old West, steampunk, and fantasy. The turn-based combat system against randomly appearing enemies resembles that of the predecessor, featuring techniques unique to each character, as well as the Guardian system, which allows the characters to summon powerful creatures to assist them in battles. Three combatants can be used actively in battles; the player can also switch any of them with a reserve character, up to six altogether.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is an action-adventure game and a sequel to the 2010 game, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and the 35th installment on the Castlevania franchise. The game was developed by MercurySteam and published by Konami. This is MercurySteam's last contribution to the franchise. The story is set in both medieval and modern worlds. As in the previous game, the player controls Gabriel Belmont, now known as Dracula, as he fights through an open world. During the game's opening sequence the player is able to control Dracula while he still possesses all his powers as well as all of his weapons. Dracula's main weapon is his Blood Whip, a weapon that is comparable to the Combat Cross from the original Lords of Shadow. Replacing the magic system from the previous game are the Void Sword and the Chaos Claws. The Void Sword can replenish Dracula's health when used while the Chaos Claws can be used to break through enemy defenses and deliver powerful attacks. The story mode in Lords of Shadow 2 has been stated to be far longer than the previous one. The game is mainly an open world allowing the player to choose what route to take. This game also features a movable camera, something that was not available in the first Lords of Shadow game.
