Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (1997)

by Konami, Gradiente
Genres:Adventure, Platform
Themes:Action, Fantasy, Historical, Comedy
Game modes:Single player
Story:The story follows Goemon's struggles to prevent the Peach Mountain Shoguns gang from turning Japan into a Westernized fine arts theater. The plot calls for three cinematic musical features and battles between giant robots; like other Ganbare Goemon games, it is peppered with surrealist humor and anachronisms. The protagonist of Mystical Ninja is Goemon, a hot-blooded, kiseru-wielding ninja with blue, bushy hair based loosely on the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon. The lord of Oedo asks him to find those who maimed Oedo Castle. Goemon lives in Oedo Town and is friends with Ebisumaru, a strange, gluttonous fat man who wears a blue bandana. Ebisumaru is defined as lazy and perverted. Their kunai-throwing friend Sasuke is a mechanical ninja (made by the Wise Man of Iga) who enjoys hot baths and Japanese tea. Rounding out the heroes is Yae, a fierce sword-wielding kunoichi, who happens upon Goemon's band in Zazen Town. The villains of the game hail from the organization Peach Mountain Shoguns and include a gang of four "weirdos" led by Spring Breeze Dancin' (Danshin Harukaze) and Kitty Lily (Margaret Ranko). They intend to transform Japan into a stage for their talents.Show more

This game has been a favorite of mine since the day I first played it when I was a kid. It's an N64 title that is often overlooked when compared to its high profile competition, but thankfully it left an impression on many people who still remember it. It is an early 3D title and accomplished the format quite well, all things considered; it doesn't have quite the same masterful design as Zelda, or Mario, but it has a certain panache that makes it very endearing, and highly playable. It's also unabashedly Japanese, funny, and has a stellar soundtrack. This game deserves to be on GOG because it's not available anywhere else. Even in its native home of Japan, Ganbare Goemon is not exactly relevant anymore. The N64 emulation is shoddy which makes it not ideal, and Nintendo never made a newer port of it. This game is way too good to be left in obscurity, and it could really use a once-over for controller support and OS compatibility. GOG is the perfect home for it.

Definitely one of my personal favorites from the Nintendo 64. It is considered a hidden Gem and well worth playing. Wish Nintendo made this available for the Switch but would be nice to see it be available this way. The only negatives I can think of the game is the controls are not great and could be improved, the camera needs to be better, and the game is pretty short and could be longer and maybe more open world and maybe add lore or trivia about Japan. Deserves to become wildly available.

When I was a child my mom bought me this game randomly one day and I fell in absolute love with it. Of course I was young and couldn't afford to buy a memory card, mom and dad didn't understand. So I plowed through the beginning hours of this game so many times I could run through them blindfolded. Eventually I settled on leaving the console on to finally beat the full game, thankfully it wasn't too terribly long. I loved this game one of the few I got in those days, I still own some of my N64 games but not this one, a home invaider stole it and many others from me sadly.

Ambermoon
AmbermoonAmbermoon is the second game in Thalion's never-finished Amber trilogy that was started out by Amberstar. The sequel is set more than half a century after the first game, the world of Lyramion just starting to recover from the destruction caused by the collapse of the red moon. The original protagonist is an old, dying man as the game starts out. He summons his grandchild and tells him about a vision he had, of an old friend who supposedly died more than forty years ago and warned him of a great evil rising again. He sends the youth on a quest to seek that old friend and find out what is behind that vision. Concerning gameplay, Ambermoon is similar to its predecessor. The player initially controls only the main character, having the choice between a male and a female protagonist with several portraits each, but otherwise unable to customize them at that point. During the course of the game, additional characters may be recruited in various places in Lyramion; up to six form an active party that participates in combat. All characters can train physical attributes by specific NPCs in various towns, while some can also buy, learn, and cast offensive, supportive, and healing magic spells.

NaissanceE
NaissanceENaissanceE is a first person exploration PC game developed on UDK by Limasse Five with the participation of Pauline Oliveros, Patricia Dallio and Thierry Zaboitzeff. The adventure takes place in a primitive mysterious structure and the game mainly consists to explore and feel the deep and strong ambiance of this atemporal world but platforming and puzzles areas will also enrich the experience. NaissanceE is a game, a philosophical trip and an artistic experience. The game is constructed along a linear path punctuated by more open areas to freely explore, some puzzles to solves and some more experimental sequences. Going deeper and deeper in a primitive zone from “Naissance” world, the player will meet entities or mechanical systems. Whether those entities are life forms or pure machines, they react to player presence, to light and shadow and they may open access to the following. If most parts of the journey will require only curiosity and logic, a good control and coordination on running, breathing and jumping actions will help to go through rare but exigent sequences, as an homage to old school die an retry games. The main idea behind the game is to make the player appreciate the loneliness, the feeling to be lost in a gigantic unknown universe and to be marvelled by the beauty of this world. A world which seems to be alive, leading the player, manipulating him and playing with him for any reason. Imagination is an important key to enjoy and understand NaissanceE. Walking in an undiscovered abstract structure brings questions about the nature of this world, about the meaning of this trip. Evocating and symbolic, the architecture and events will lead player’s imagination to find an answer, if it only matters.
