The original DS release of 999 tells one of the most mind-blowing stories in gaming. The HD remaster of 999 is an adaptation for modern platforms that doesn't preserve what made the original so special, so the original 999 deserves to be preserved! Teenage-me had no idea what he was in for when playing this game blind. This game was my introduction to psychological horror and sci-fi narratives, and set the bar extremely high on how stories can exploit the medium of games in a way only an interactive medium can.
This is a disturbing but absolutely marvelous game. It has such an excellent cast of characters and not a single one of them are forgettable. So many endings and mysterious paths to take. Although the dialogue often gets way to descriptive every time there is a graphic scene, but it's what makes it all the more memorable. And the thrilling music really emphasizes the atmosphere. I find it fitting to call this my 9th favorite game of all time. Surprised it isn't ported to more modern consoles more regularly.
