Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia (1989)

by Brøderbund Software
Genres:Adventure, Platform, Puzzle
Themes:Action
Game modes:Single player
Story:The game is set in ancient Persia. While the sultan is fighting a war in a foreign land, his vizier Jaffar, a wizard, seizes power. Jaffar's only obstacle to the throne is the Sultan's daughter (although the game never specifically mentions how). Jaffar locks her in a tower and orders her, under threat of execution, to become his wife. The game's nameless protagonist, whom the Princess loves, is thrown into the palace dungeons. The player must lead the protagonist out of the dungeons and to the palace tower, defeating Jaffar and freeing the Princess in under 60 minutes. In addition to guards, various traps and dungeons, the protagonist is further hindered by his own doppelgänger, an apparition of his own self that is conjured out of a magic mirror.Show more

This absolute classic cannot miss from gog! I played PoP on DOS back then, but there are many versions of it (even quite different, like the SNES one). I remember being in awe of how fluid the animation was. The game was quite hard tho.. you had infinite respawns at the start of each level, but most falls and all traps insta-killed you and there was a time limit of 1h for the entire run!

Prince of Persia was the game we all played when I was a child. It was the first thing we tried when my dad had a new pc - from a black and green screen IBM XT up until a VGA and Soundblaster equiped 486, everytime it became better looking and better sounding, and it still fitted on that same floppy! This game tought me how to play videogames: running, small steps, timing of a jump, we all had to figure it out. I remember we made phonecalls with family to discuss how to get pass a certain point. Level and enemy design was really well done: from the skeleton, the fat guard and the mirror image, all the way to that clever mouse and in the end Jafar himself: what a journey! Truly one of gaming histories legends.

Prince of Persia was one of my first games on the Mac. I still remember the weird shapes of the boxes for this, and Shadow and Flame. We of course, got the better graphics on the Mac (the prince was wearing his jacket, and fluffy pants). I even booted up a System 7 emulator a year or two ago, just so I could try another run-through. I STILL have my floppies. Still disappointed that we didn't get PoP 3 (as seemed to be getting set up through the crystal ball on Shadow and Flame) When I first heard about GoG, I thought for sure that this title would be here, but it was only that Prince 3D. It would be great if we could get this here, it would be great to get the better Amiga/Mac graphics as an option over the PC version

How this game is not available on GOG or any other gaming storefront is unbelievable. This is a classic for so many reasons. An innovative game that used rotoscoping to input movements of characters. Floor traps. Flickering torches. Duels. Potions. An aura of mystery and magic and imaginative history. Simple mechanics, but a classic.
One of the first games I ever played! I was born in the late 90s and my grandad loved to try me and my brother on games he'd discovered with my Mum and her brother when they were kids. Never got past the first screen or two unassisted, would love to try it again!

We played it together with some friends on DOS. Taking turns and advancing through the levels. Great memories and a lot of fun. Very well balanced even though I was never able to finish it without the megahit cheat ;) Also highly recommend to read about the creation of the game. The creator did the animations by filming his brother jumping in a parking lot and then rotoscoping it.
I was born too late to experience it when it first came out, but I will always remember playing the Flash versions of this game and The Shadow and The Flame on my dad's computer when I was a kid. Unfortunately, Adobe killed Flash and Ubisoft hasn't bothered to make any kind of re-release or official modern PC port. It would be a shame to see this game forgotten because the original PoP games and the Sands of Time trilogy formed some great memories in my childhood and was my gateway into gaming.
All I want is the 1990 Broderbund MSDOS version. It is the version I played back when I was finishing high school. There are many other versions but to me this is the one that looks the best, and also has the cool FM music. Please push this version!
Those games also need your vote!
