Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution (2003)

by Sega AM2, Sega
Genres:Fighting
Themes:Action
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Evolution was an updated version of Virtua Fighter 4. The game introduced two new characters and adjusted every other character as well. The two new characters were the Judoka-assassin, Goh Hinogami and the Muay Thai boxer Brad Burns. With the addition of Brad Burns, Vanessa Lewis's alternate Muay Thai style from Virtua Fighter 4 was removed and replaced with a Vale Tudo "Offensive" style; making her a solely Vale Tudo brawler. All of the stages were adjusted. For example, Lei-Fei's stage in Virtua Fighter 4 previously took place during sunset, in Evolution it takes place during the morning.Show more

As someone who started with Virtua Fighter with VF4, it was VF4: Evolution that locked me into what has become my favorite 3D fighting game from a gameplay level. VF4 Evolution is the ultimate entry point of the series and, dare I say, the genre as a whole. What the game lacks in Story Mode, it makes up for in its Quest Mode, a mode that acts as a simulation of the Arcade Scene by allowing a player to take their character through various arcades and tournaments to play against the ghost data of different players, including many recognizable VF names from the scene at the time, creating an infinitely replayable and rewarding experience. The biggest benefit to VF4: Evolution being preserved and revived on GOG, however, is the in-depth Tutorial features present in the game. While most games settle on teaching you the basics, VF4: Evolution goes above and beyond by setting up lessons centered on intermediate, advanced, and character-specific tools, techniques, and combos. The VF4: Evolution Tutorial is, with no hyperbole, the "Gold Standard" of Fighting Game Tutorials, providing an understanding of fighting game mechanics that extends even beyond the Virtua Fighter series with evergreen lessons that will level-up any player remotely interested in the fighting game genre. While the Virtua Fighter series has progressed beyond VF4: Evolution with the release of the VF5 series of titles (5, 5R, 5FS, 5US, and 5REVO), VF4: Evolution remains a powerful foundational building block for the series and fighting games as a whole. Without VF4: Evolution releasing on the PlayStation 2 in 2003, there's no telling where my own fighting game life would be, but I do know that, as a result of this game's release, I've stuck with the series for over 20 years, and now, I do commentary for the scene and am able to play alongside some of the best players in the world. VF4: Evolution stands as the single greatest entry point in fighting games, and seeing it again is a service to the genre.

Street Fighter II
Street Fighter IIA sequel to Street Fighter, Street Fighter II improved upon the many concepts introduced in the first game, including the use of command-based special moves and a six-button configuration, while offering players a selection of multiple playable characters, each with their own unique fighting style and special moves. Street Fighter II is credited for starting the fighting game boom during the 1990s. Its success led to the production of several updated versions, each offering additional features and characters over previous versions, as well as many home versions. Some of the home versions of the Street Fighter II games have sold millions of copies, with the SNES port of the first Street Fighter II being Capcom's best-selling consumer game of all-time as of 2008. Street Fighter II follows several of the conventions and rules already established by its original 1987 predecessor. The player engages opponents in one-on-one close quarter combat in a series of best-two-out-of-three matches. The objective of each round is to deplete the opponent's vitality before the timer runs out. If both opponents knock each other out at the same time or the timer runs out with both fighters having an equal amount of vitality left, a "double KO" or "draw game" is declared and additional rounds will be played until sudden death. In the first Street Fighter II, a match could last up to ten rounds if there was no clear winner; this was reduced to four rounds in Champion Edition and onward. If there is no clear winner by the end of the final round, then either the computer-controlled opponent will win by default in a single-player match or both fighters will lose in a 2-player match. After every third match in the single player mode, the player will participate in a "bonus game" for additional points. The bonus games includes (in order) a car-breaking event; a barrel breaking bonus game where the barrels are dropped off from a conveyor belt above the player; and a drum-breaking bonus game where drums are flammable and piled over each other. The bonus games were removed from the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Like in the original, the game's controls uses a configuration of an eight-directional joystick and six attack buttons. The player uses the joystick to jump, crouch and move the character towards or away from the opponent, as well as to guard the character from an opponent's attacks. There are three punch buttons and three kick buttons of differing strength and speed (Light, Medium and Heavy). The player can perform a variety of basic moves in any position, including grabbing/throwing attacks, which were not featured in the original Street Fighter. Like in the original, the player can perform special moves by inputting a combination of directional and button-based commands. Street Fighter II differs from the original due to the selection of multiple playable characters, each with their distinct fighting styles and special moves. Additionally, the player can also "cancel" during animation by performing another move, allowing for a combination of several basic and special moves. Both of these features would be expanded upon in subsequent installments.

Street Fighter
Street FighterStreet Fighter is the first fighting game produced by Capcom and the very first game in the Street Fighter series. Dark Earth
Dark EarthDark Earth is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure game for the PC. Dark Earth takes place several centuries in the future, when a meteor collision with Earth tossed up great clouds of dust that blocked out the sun. Earth's remaining survivors began to seek refuge beneath small openings in the clouds, the few places light could be found. Those that remained in the 'dark earth' were hunted by strange creatures, infected with the darkness. To shelter themselves from the dangerous 'dark earth', the people began to form cities beneath the light called 'Stallites'. At the time of the game, most of the citizens of the stallite have forgotten their history and now worship the light as a god. The stalites are run by 'Sun Priests', who maintain order and prevent the creatures of darkness from harming the city. The game follows the story of Arkhan, a "guardian of fire", protector of the stallite 'Sparta' and the Sun Priests. After an attack on the sun priests, Arkhan has a poison thrown into his face that begins to infect him with the dark sickness. He begins to mutate into a creature of the dark and has to find a cure before his transformation is complete. Along the way, he is treated as an enemy by most of his former friends while he struggles to uncover the conspiracy behind the attack.
