--- UPDATE ---

Thank you all for participating! This giveaway has now ended.

And once again your posts made me very happy. Thank you for that too! You guys mentioned some games that I had almost forgotten :-)

My all time favourite RPG is Ultima VII. After that, only Planescape: Torment has given me the same feeling. From the more modern games Divinity: Original Sin was also great.

Without further ado, the lucky winner chosen by /dev/urandom is GOG user ConsulCaesar!
Congrats! You will be contacted soon via GOG chat.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

--- --- --- ---

Greetings!

My last giveaway about a month ago was a success. At least for me. So many people participated and made good arguments about what makes a "good old game". So I decided to do another one. For this giveaway, let's talk about RPGs.

How do you like your RPG? Do you favor indie games, or AAA productions? Or do you perhaps hate RPGs? How about real time action vs turn based? What makes you say BEST RPG EVER!!!

Here are the rules:

1. This giveaway closes 24 hours from now and after that you can not enter anymore.
2. To enter this giveaway, you must post below and tell how you feel about RPGs.
3. If you win, you must personally reclaim the code. You can not give it away.
4. The winner will be selected randomly from those who entered this giveaway.
5. And the price/giveaway? A game of winner's choosing from the GOG catalog. Note that the game has to be already released. Games in development are not eligible.

I will contact the winner via GOG Chat to ask what he/she likes to have so you need to check that your privacy settings will allow this.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the giveaway. I'm in.

I don't know much about RPG but my favorites are Mass Effect and The Witcher trilogy. The decisions I made in those games felt like it mattered to the game world.

I'm in for the giveaway.

Personally speaking, I like 1990s JRPGs, such as Chrono Trigger. That one in particular had a real sense of adventure to it. Also, if anyone here has not played the JRPG known as "Earthbound". That's another good one.

RPGs used to be by far my favorite genre. I played Baldur's Gate obsessively. Same with Planescape: Torment. Or Divine Divinity!

I still lust after RPGs. I love character creation, assembling a party of misfits - preferring to go slightly off center rather than well balanced, but really paying attention that their strengths work together well. I immerse myself in the lore of the world, and experience it all with fresh eyes...
...and then after a couple of days of playing, I somehow always hit a point where I'm utterly "meh". It's all too much of the same. The leveling, the quests, the items... I've seen it all before. Such ennui. Even games approaching it all from a new direction, where I was really hoping they'd break me out of that, like Tyranny, end up having the same type of everything.

I keep making new attempts, and keep intending to return to games I've abandoned halfway through. Sometimes I even do. Only to then abandon them anew a couple of days later in favour of a city builder or a weirdly unclassifiable indie game that'll hook me thoroughly with its rough edges until I've finished it in one go.

I guess the flaw lies not with the games, but with me. I wish it didn't. I'd love to still love RPGs!

(Oh, and thanks for your generosity with this giveaway!)

I'm in and kudos for the giveaway.

Infinity engine games are the template for my fav RPGs. Good story, sense of exploration (especially in BG1), interesting locations, rtwp combat, nice graphics that survive the test of time. Lots of interesting indie RPGs which I prefer over AAA titles.

Not in, but +1 for your generosity.

Good luck to all who are in.
Even though I play RPGs less and less as I get older, this genre will always have a special place in my heart. I'm not even allowing myself to get interested in 99,99% of newly released RPGs simply because there are still many older games from this fruitful genre that I never played but owe myself to try out.

For me the most important aspect in every RPG is freedom. I like to be able to ignore the main quest if I want to and just explore, sink into the lore, turn every stone, etc. That's why Elder Scroll games are my favorite RPG series, with Morrowind being one of the most magical experiences I had in gaming in general.

Thank you for the giveaway, tykinruoka! :)
Hello, thank you for the Giveaway :)

I'm in ;)

I like Torchlight 1&2 - because it's very relaxing Hack and Slash (I call it soft-rpg ;)) with immortal stylized graphics.
I like The Witcher Series - because it's about my favourite character from books, and I have waited for it for ages.
I like KOTOR - this game made me interested in the whole universum, which I didn't really like it before.
I like Dragon Age Origins - because I had got a long gaming hangover after it. Perfect ending with perfect soundtrack.
I like Titan Quest and Grim Dawn - the best replacement for Diablo 2 in GOG imo.
I like Baldur's Gate - because of the plot, which stays long time in memory, and I can't wait for playing BG3 someday.
I like Fallout Tactics - because it's the good old Fallout, but without time limit (the greatest curse in games imo) ;)
I like Divinity 2: Ego Draconis - because you can feel the true power of being dragon. I want the ED sequel ;)
And many more, eg. Bound by Flame, Technomancer, Risen, Shadowrun, etc...

I think the most valuable thing in RPGs are the plot and OST, but also the gameplay and the length.
Thank you for the chance! I'm in :D

I prefer RPGs in the style of Divinity: Original Sin. The old-school mechanics make it much more interesting in my view, although I also find games like Morrowind extremely interesting. Granted I haven't played as many RPGs as a lot of users on these forums, I can appreciate games that simply draw you in and help you get lost in the world they create.

Even though almost half of my GOG catalog is point and click adventures, I've noticed that I'd rather play RPGs for stories (and stealth games for puzzles) than adventure games now that I'm older.
I'm in! And why not, it's always fun to talk about RPGs.

I love RPGs, though they also sometimes "intimidate" me, in that they tend to be a huge time sink. Which is why I prefer them to have easy to learn and intuitive rules as much as possible, to make them easy to pick up, and to take a break from and come back to. A good journal and map also goes a long way.

Usually I prefer turn based combat to action, but really the most important thing is the story and/or the world. Give me a world I can really lose myself in, like Witcher 3, and everything else is a mere technicality. Fallouts are always fun to just wander around. Those are the kind of games that really let you feel like you're on the road in those worlds. There's so much that just happens, in places and in between places, doesn't figure into the overall story, but shapes you.
Kotor and Mass Effect (mostly the first one) are the other way around. Much more structured, but the story and the characters more than make up for it. It's more cinematic, but that's not a bad thing. Most RPGs take more from books, but games are a visual medium, going with cinematic inspirations makes perfect sense.
Divinity Original Sin has fantastic combat, and I really enjoyed the hell out of it, but the main storyline is actually rather weak. It's saving grace is that the world is quite charming and the side content is quite good. It's a good example of a world that's just so nice and fun, in terms of visuals, music, characters, the story of your adventure is actually way better in your head than what the writers actuall came up with.
Legend of Grimrock practically has no story, but there is just something very compelling and immersive about that simple dungeon crawl scenario. Not something I could keep going back to, but once in a blue moon it's a fun flipside to RPGs with big worlds.
Lionheart, Legacy of the Crusader is not a great game overall, but that first act in Barcelona in itself is probably the most interesting world I ever visited in an RPG. I still wish for a sequel that would do justice in full to that setting. It's so clever and unique, it feels like an adaptation of some great lost fantasy book.
Driftmoon is simple and short, but has plenty of heart and humor, it's a game with a very strong identity. Really feels like going on this sort of lighthearted but also poignant adventure you'd see in the Princess Bride or Willow.

And so on... I don't even know why I chose those particular titles, there's many more... but I have to stop somewhere :D

Thanks for the generosity! :D

Count me in. ^_^

I love the genre, currently playing AC Odyssey (really fun to explore the world), but my favorite is Morrowind. It's the only RPG I played through 3 times.
A really great giveaway thank you I'm in.

I usually like any kind of RPG, but my favourite types are Pillars of Eternity like or Dragon Age Origins like or Deus Ex like...
So I love games where you can actually change the result of the game based on your action, where the combat is real time with pause or a mix between RPG and FPS and Stealth and I love both indie and AAA productions.

The most important thing about RPGs for me is that I need to feel the game alive, I need to immerse myself into the world, the story, the system (quest/combat/out of combat).
I love multi-path-dialog and multiple solutions to avoid combat, and I love to be able to decide if I want to try to kill an NPC even in the main story.

I also like turn based combat... but I feel like the best kind is when there is something really new about it (like the shadowrun deckers cyberspace).
I love both fantasy and cyberpunk/sci-fi city.

Usually I avoid hack&slash but I also play that kind if I really like anything about the game.
Guess I'm... trying to meow my way in?

I don't know whether I like RPGs or not because the term isn't so well defined. Or it has multiple conflicting definitions and no-one has the authority to say what's the right definition. Arguing about it hasn't proven very useful in the past.

I guess it's trying to evoke some feelings about a certain style of game but it's also become a catch-all tag that gets slapped on wildly different kinds of games, so at this point I think it'd be more useful if people started using more descriptive and specific terms to say what they really mean.

I mean, what do System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Blackguards, Warlords Battlecry and Chrono Trigger have in common that you don't find in the Metro series, Stalker, Ghost Recon, Civilization, Silent Storm, HOMM3 or GemCraft? Why is Defender's Quest tagged role-playing, but Kingdom Rush and GemCraft aren't?

Between the last three games I mentioned, Defender's Quest is imho the worst (by a wide margin) and it's the only one they've tagged role-playing on GOG so I guess RPGs suck. It's also the highest rated of the three (4.5, versus 4.3 for kingdom rush and 4 for frostborn wrath) so I guess RPGs are the most overrated games. Knights of the Old Republic is also tagged role-playing and has a very high rating (4.7) and I hated it very much so I think we can conclude that overrated garbage is the true definition of RPG. Following that train of thought, the lowest rated game with the role-playing tag would probably be the BEST RPG EVER! Or maybe not? The problem here is that I actually like Deus Ex (4.9). And while Morrowind (4.8) wasn't very good, it didn't absolutely suck like KOTOR. Hmph, there goes my theory.

Hi thank you for the giveaway.

RPG are my favorite type of game, i like any king of rpg but the mist important part to me is the story, i prefer playing a character made for the game without personalisation like the witcher series if the story is very good than a open world like skyrim. I also like if we have choice in dialog and it's even better if you see the consequence of your choice later in the game.
