Breja: So, who were those Beatles guys? Did they play rock?

I don't mean this as anything against the OP, but it baffles me that any gamer could not know what Warcraft and Warcraft 2 are. i mean, they are among the most famous, defining games ever made. I guess I'm just old, and have reached the point where people ask "what" when you're talking about stuff that to you used to live and breathe.
I don't agree with the Beatles/music analogy. Many people that do know The Beatles have never heard of, for example; Karlheinz Stockhausen. Do you consider the latter less worthy of knowing?
I'm trying to say: music history and game history are far from 1:1 comparable.
When you and I were a lot younger, people interested in gaming were more often a lot more passionate about it and (often) interested in its history (though it was a lot more difficult to learn about it).
Nowadays the average gamer is closer to the average... well... anybody.

firstpastthepost: I agree... the only thing I missed that was cut in 2 was the wall building... I love building fortifications
Did they cut that in multiplayer too? I never played Warcraft 1/2 multiplayer, but I remember Warcraft 2's campaigns had pre-set wall sections in some missions; I always thought you could build them in multiplayer.

Honestly it's been forever since I've played and don't remember if it was in the multiplayer or not. I just remember being disappointed that I couldn't build them in the campaign.

Kelefane: I'm 42 and nope never played either of them. But then again i wasn't exactly into strategy games back then either. I was more of a dungeon crawler RPG and sports game kind of guy. It's shocking that some folks haven't played certain games I know.
I really didn't mean to sound hostile or anything like that, and if I did I apologise.

But I'm all the more baffled now. And not playing warcraft doesn't really explain it. It's a game so famous and important you don't really need to play it to know it. It's like how everyone knows the basic plot to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, including the twist ending, without even reading the book. There are many classic games I have not played but I still "know" them, because of simply how big and important they were at some point, like Dungeon Keeper, The Sims, King's Quest etc.

But I only meant to express surprise, not to imply you should be ashamed.

All I meant was that some things are so popular and present in popular conciousness that they seem quite inescapable. I never meant to imply that popularity equals worthiness.

Kelefane: I never played Warcraft 1 and 2. Are they RTS?
The are not RTS. They are *the* RTS.

Yes, I know they are not the first real time strategy game, but they pretty much defined the genre. The main classic "Townhall produces peasants, who gather resources and build buildings, which can train units or offer upgrades, while unit number is limited by farms" branch of RTSes was basically popularized by Warcraft.

You could build walls in multiplayer, not in single player.

If I remember right it was done in order to avoid cheesy tactics vs AI who had trouble dealing with walls and could be beaten with cheesy wall-tactics.

Thanks everyone.
WC 2 was the first RTS I ever played and it has been my go to genre since.
RTS

Real Time Strategy

They are very different from C&C, because they have Population Limit (you build farms to allow you train more units) and you have to arrange teams. You can select and order around a number of units and not a huge army, unlike in C&C, which narrows and limits down your planning/options, quite a bit. But at the same time, forces you to utilize tactics. You need a healthy mix of different units, each one with certain roles and unlike C&C also, training lots and lots of the same unit (the one you favor the most, ex Russian tanks or American G.I.) and unleashing them unto the enemy in a random, chaotic blitz, will get you nowhere...

From Warcraft 2 expansion onwards, hero units are a thing.

Warcraft 1/2 games have a great, unique, LEGENDARY Soundtrack, which is worth its money, even standalone. It is a must for any gamer or collector. Myself, even though i like and prefer C&C style/gameplay 10x times more, i really appreciate and reserve a special spot, for Warcraft. It is a thing of its own, in a league all of its own!
