GoJays2025: Everything a business does is calculated. I would find it MORE likely that for example with Hitman, the free DLC are actually items cut from the main game to be given away in pieces as a sign of good will (sometimes I wonder if CDPR did that with Witcher 3). What the studio head said? Probably more stuff to generate good will and generate positive word of mouth about the game leading to more purchases. Different strategy to Deus Ex, one is trying to grab pre-orders while the other is trying to create a better image for the studio and increase sales of the game in the long run. I have nothing to back up anything with obviously, but they must have their reasons why such strategies might increase profits.
Again its all about the perception that customers will have regarding a particular company and that is what really matters. Even if CDPR or IO Interactive allegedly intentionally cut out content to then give it away as free DLC, then that doesn't make any difference to consumers as everyone that bought the game will have access to all of it regardless of pre-ordering or not. In other words this approach doesn't punish cautious customers that don't pay for a game upfront and therefore leaves a very positive impression overall. Eidos Montreal/Squeenix's different strategy for Deus Ex is not so unique as most big publishers strive to maximize their profits without regard for their customers and fans. This abhorrent Augemented pre-order marketing tactic is going to separate the consumer base not only in terms of content but access to the game as well. The pre-order customers will be treated as elite and everyone else will be nickle and dimed for their lack of blind faith if they want to get their hands on the pre-order extra mission, in other words Deus Ex: Customer base Divided. So this approach actually puts off some customers from not only pre-ordering but also from buying the game at all and thus leaves a terrible impression for the publisher overall.
GoJays2025: I can argue for either side. I enjoy arguing for sides I don't even agree with, as is in this case. You can't be so one-sided in any debate - there's always logic on both sides. Anyway the only way to stop publishers doing this is simply not indulging them. As profit is the reason for pretty much the entirety of all business decisions, if you don't throw money at stupid pre-order DLCs then they'll be forced to try other things in the future, and perhaps free DLCs are the way to go (though they could try cutting content from the main game to give the illusion of a 'free' extra), or maybe a completely new route.
Well then I don't know why we're really arguing as not supporting such dubious attempts to exploit customers by publishers is what I was suggesting in my previous posts. Ofcourse every business is out to make money but that is entirely possible by treating customers with respect and care instead of always trying to think of new ploys to milk every cent out of them before the product is even released. I never said that all DLC should be free and I'm perfectly fine with substantial content being released separately at a reasonable price which quite a few publishers do for their games. For the very first time CDPR are going to release additional expansion DLCs for The Witcher 3 which they haven't done with any of their previous games and a majority of the customers have gladly given away their money in advance to support them because of the perception they have built up by treating consumers fairly. :)Post edited September 06, 2015 by stg83

Well it is 6 days later and squeeznix "kickstarter stretch goal" still stay on tier 1.
Guess the amount of people who pre-ordered is thankfully small
I guess the big profits they earned inflate their heads too much.

How you spend your money is your responsibility, not the responsibility of critics, reviewers and publishers.
Blaming them is irrational. Its your own lack of patience and responsibility that leads to bad purchasing decisions.

It's still almost 6 months till release. More than enough time for the meta game aspect to kick in, I'm afraid...Guess the amount of people who pre-ordered is thankfully small

Is that like the 50 billion people in the "Boycott Call of Duty!" steam group who all bought Call of Duty?
