so I want to add some items that are free but when i go to checkout my balance is 0 and it does not let me check out ... not allowed to pay with anything how come i cannot add these free items?

Which items are these?

If they are DLC you need the base game else it will not let you.

Many free DLCs at GOG could be gifted.
You do not have to have the base game.

You do not have to have the base game.
Perhaps, however you still cannot redeem DLC unless you have the base game. doesn't change if you can gift it or not.

GOG have pulled down quite a lot of free games and DLCs.
Gift those free items to yourself when they are still there.
