Nothing could ever beat, or even come close to, Cryo's original Dune game.

And an MMO Dune would be terrible idea even back when open world MMOs were thriving. I mean... it's a desert. That's all. That doesn't exactly make for an exciting world to explore in a traditional MMO way. It can be quite an experience to be lost amid such a place for a while, but it's not something sustainable for months of gameplay. Also, there are like five people in the Dune universe that truly matter. Playing some random fremen is not exactly promising loads of fun.
Dune: Mobile
Dune: Battle Royale
Dune: The acually interesting sounding game that will be cancelled halfway through development

Am I doing this right?
I don't see the appeal in MMO Dune, I'll wait for more news to see what they are planning to do with the franchise.

SpecShadow: Could be worse, like EA who couldn't make anything worthy (or just anything) with Star Wars.

Now maybe there can be a chance to bring Dune games on GOG, would play Emperor BoD again.

MMOs? These days? Secret World was awesome unlike all these WoW parroting clones but still - these day?
The funny part here is that EA did release some DUNE games which were pretty good........... I miss Westwood

Though Brian Herbert (Frank's son and current rights holder to Dune) has made it very clear he hated what Westwood did with Dune, and hated the RTS games with passion.

I personally liked them and would much rather have them re-releaed and a new RTS game instead of some MMO that i'm never going to play as I hate MMOs.

I can see why if he was hoping the Westwood games to be something more story heavy. It really is a shame, Dune was never turned into an adventure of an RPG. That Cryo game had sort of a right idea.

But who knows, maybe Funcom will make an RPG out of it, something solo player hopefully. Though I guess it all depends on how well they've looted from their current lineup of MMO's. I do know Conan Exiles has been profitable for them, so they might be considering at least one survival MMO.

Sure, if we limit the whole Dune Universe to one planet...

You are saying like everyone in LotR Online plays as Aragorn. Wait, does one? I haven't played LotR Online.

You forgot Dune: Survival in the Desert (literal sand box).

I can say that wasn't mutual. Emperor: Battle for Dune did include some missions based on Dune Prequels (written by Brian Herbert).

That's pretty much the only place we ever spend any amount of time in in the books. Unless they go with the prequel/sequel stuff from other authors. I never read that, and I'm not interested.

Almost. I mean, not Aragorn, but you basically have tons of wizards and hundreds of Hobbits leaving the Shire for grand adventures. So yeah, I guess following this logic we can have dozens of Kwisatz Haderachs and hundreds of planetary ecologists turned Fremen leaders. But somehow this does not sound very appealing to me.
More Dune games sounds great. But why Funcom...

You forgot Dune: The Remake or perhaps Dune: Redux

Sounds like he's jealous that someone else (outside of Herbert's family) managed to use Dune and create something better than him.
His books were awful, like, really.

Wish that GOG re-released these games...

because who else, competent and with money, somewhat respected by people outside the industry (or even within aforementioned industry), could get that IP and greenlight for new projects?
Maybe Obsidian under MS's hand but I dunno

Dune 2000 was an awesome game, they even got Brad Dourif to do the Harkonnen briefings as the Mentat dude from the movie.

Ehh… I'd rather have copyright reformed. This madness must stop.
Why? So anyone can make Dune games which aren't loyal to the source material in any way, like what has happened to HP Lovecraft?

Why not? There are many “aren't loyal to the source material” games which are loved by fans. You might get a bit of that, and a bit of that, or who knows what entirely, but there is opportunity.

With “eternal” copyright you get nothing other than what someone approved. And that someone can't even write a single good Dune book :/ The more works you get, the more chance you have to get at least something of substance.
