So I have a friend who is really trying to get me into the Fate/Subtitle series.

I tried to watch the anime. Stretching a VN/LN chapter over 40 minutes was very boring.

Right now, I'm trying the LN. The presentation is…standard for a game of it's type, but alas, I've been spoiled by far better.

So I came in from Phoenix Wright as my first introduction to visual novels. The text pacing was very good, the characters animated, and it didn't take 15 minutes just to get though one scene. (I'm a speed reader, so anything with janky text pacing is just bad.)

Fate by default has sweeping text, wiping transitions, and lifeless stills for character shots. Even with the text made instant, and the transitions instant, there's still a pause every time a pose changes, and scrolling though the text is still a pain.

The thing is, Phoenix Wright came out first on GBA, back in 2001. Even though Fate as a VN first premiered in 2004, I feel that Type Moon could have done better.

I suppose the thing is, both Phoenix Wright and games such as Professor Layton do break things up a fair bit.

So, that's my rant. Are there any games you'd want to play, if it was presented in another style? I feel I'd enjoy Fate more if it just eschewed with all the space & pauses between text, and just gave me it all at a time. Like an actual novel.
Many japanese-styled games, and in particular all those famous RPGs, supposedly well written, but plagued by this habit of representing characters as toddlers on the map or top-down view.

Speaking of toddlers, I can't help but notice a lot of them also treat you like a toddler, never once thinking, "Hey, the game industry has been around a while, maybe they've played an RPG once before!"

They are doing that for the old people like me who need to relearn games ever time we play them because our memory has turned to shit.
Tough question. Off the top of my head I don't remember any game in which the presentation was the only thing to turn me off. If the gameplay is fun, I usually don't find it so hard to accept the presentation style. Although the graphics are a factor in what games I choose to try, so if a game looks ugly or off-putting, it would have a harder time to get my attention, it would require others recommending it a lot or the concept sounding really special and fun. What puts me off most in graphical presentation is when the style is not consistent. So low resolution, stickmen etc. are not really a problem unless they're combined with detailed high resolution graphics or UI elements that don't fit this style.

How do you feel about mixed bittage in many newer indie games?
If it counts, the lack of a 'cockpit' view has put me off of several racing games. Though sometimes I make due without it nu using the 'bumper-view', for instance in NFS Underground 1&2, as well as in NFS:Most Wanted. I usually don't like the camera above and behind the car, except when it's GTA, or weirdly, motorhead or any other racer not involving cars (eg star wars racer / rollcage)

The overall style of 2008's Prince of Persia also really puts me off, to the point of not even really wanting to check out the game.

WHAT!?!?!

I can't play cockpit view! :P

I'm not kidding man.
You put me literally in a drivers seat I am beyond fucked. I can't get two feet. XD

The ironic thing is, I'm a great driver IRL. One speeding ticket in twenty-five years and that was for doing 35 in a 30.

What do you mean by "bittage"? Pixel graphics mixed with high res elements? Can you name some games as examples?

(i may be the only human being who enjoyed the malaria thing in far cry2. i guess that sometimes there's a game, or just a game element, that is made just personally for you and nobody else. when it happens, my reaction to complaints and criticisms is a guilty giggle.)

Yes, I do mean that. As for examples, I'd say Stardew Valley and Starbound have both mixed graphics of differing resolutions.
