I want to be able to play with the original controls of Doom. I want to be able to bind my alt key as a strafe.
Without the older versions of Doom to be available for download, this simply is not possible, currently, as the strafe bind is locked out.
Please allow the rollback feature to be activated for this game, or fix the controls, or, heck, both!

The old version is still available for download. It's called The Ultimate Doom.

Those who own Ultimate Doom, now have two Doom entries in their GOG library .... Ultimate Doom and the new Doom 1 Enhanced (Doom 1993).

Oddly, while I can search in my library for all the Wolfenstein games using Wolf, I get nothing returned for Doom, even though I own all of the Doom games at GOG. Luckily I have added a Tag called DOOMESQUE that does return all the Doom games for me. And if I use uppercase DOOM, search just hangs.

Why not try GZDoom? A source port from the original. It well let you bind keys as you wish as well as provide support for modern resolutions, not to mention many other tweaks.

Just install doom and then follow instructions:-

I would love this feature because kingdom under fire has a game breaking bug with the latest version. It's not GOG fault since the steam version has the same issue. Got around this issue by lucky having an older version back up.

Use the Dosbox keymapper to arbitrarily set keys.

It's a bit sideways, but you'll get there.

It works for me, so it's not completely broken.

Obviously it was meant to be played with those controls, as they were part of the original game!

Using mouse is not much more convenient, because the game doesn't support mouselook, middle button functions, or anything else that is standard these days.

Of course using some third party port like GZDoom will add those, but then we are very far from the original experience, which is what the OP presumably was searching for.

No, Doom was meant to be played with the keyboard only. That's how I played it. Later I got a keyboard that had certain limitations as to which keys could be used simultaneously, which made playing Doom very annoying. I tried using mouse controls but found it too hard to play like that so gave up. Eventually I tried again, got the hang of it, and have been mousing in FPS games ever since. (Even more eventually I tried some console FPS games with a controller, but while player movement is actually better that way, aiming suuuuuuuuuucks bad even the mandatory auto-aim helping you, so nah.)

Admittedly I didn't know that Wolf 3D and Doom were designed with mouse aim in mind. I did know that both have always had horizontal mouse aim but I never knew that that was the developers' preferred way to play it. Doesn't change the fact, though, that probably most players originally played Doom only using the the keyboard and that's how they prefer to play it to this day. I know that I do and not even John Romero is gonna change that!

For some reason I do prefer to play Catacomb 3D and Wolf 3D using mouse aim, though. Curious.

Yeah I am. I actually still post something here once in a while but I admittedly extremely limited my activity on here a couple of years ago. Don't even remember the exact reasons why.

Anyway, super glad to see that you're still around too!

Fonzer: The keyboard only myth
I never claimed that it was keyboard only, and had you read my text properly, I even briefly described what nowadays common mouse functionality is missing from the game.

But there is a reason why that mouse thing is a myth.
Using keyboard was simply more convenient, so most people didn't bother using the mouse.

I think it was more also because not many people had a mouse those days i think. But yes the mouse didn't have all those functionalities those days. Don't even know if it had 3 buttons back in the day but anyway.
Why would you put todays common mouse functionality to it?
But really i do understand what you meant to say.
Don't feel bothered by my post.
i was just showing a different view.
