Been following this one a bit over a year and just saw that a new version (0.9.8.0) was recently released (huge list of changes).

This is a Free Space Simulator game in development, and looks like something NASA would put out, quite realistic.

You can get the game here :

Here is a short video clip with highlights (pretty darn amazing) :

Reminds me of a certain high budget, high price space game recently released here on GOG.com but this one looks better :-) Thank you for this!

Bookmarked but will have to wait as I am deep into X3:Terran Conflict at the moment... NO room for any other games even a bit similar now.

Games like this sometimes turn comercial upon reaching version 1.0. Not saying this one will but just warning about the possibility.

HAPPYYYY <3
tried it, it's neat, although the game part was mostly missing when I "used" it (nearly said "played" there)
Yeah, the thing is awesome, but is more of a planetarium (or 3D encyclopedia) than a game.

But it's a great companion to KSP.

(Edit : I wonder if anyone here remembers "The Halley Project", and its awesome title tune. "Space Engine" could benefit from similar little touristic quests ("And now, travel to a satellite with an atmosphere !", etc)).

This would make a very nice educational tool. Too bad it is not open-source.

I'm not sure what you're meaning . . . it's free.

Part of the Roadmap:

Gameplay:

Server database (work in progress)
Network system
Spaceship builder with physical testing of construction
Cockpit devices: orbital transfer calculator, hyperflight calculator, programmable autopilot, etc.
Docking system, remote control of units
Economics, harvesting of resources, refueling, building, etc
Weapons, combat system
Giant alien astroengineering constructions
Destruction of spaceships and buildings (modelling of thousands of fragments on the GPU), animation of explosions (gas dynamics simulation on GPU(?))
Advanced physics: jet propulsion, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics
Procedural life
Procedural civilizations
Local database
Loading of models (spaceships, buildings, etc.)
Internal structure of ships and buildings (indoor-engine)
Physics: collision detection, newtonian mechanics
Space physics: gravity forces, orbital flight, hyperdrive

Here's a longer clip, with some hand on demonstration of a (very) few options - forewarning, the guy doesn't fully have a grasp of all the commands, but you can kind of see some more things demo'd :

From the FAQ:

Q: Is this project open source?
A: No. SpaceEngine is proprietary closed-source software, and there are no current plans to make the source code available.

It means "The source code, design, and structure of the Software are trade secrets." It means I cannot learn from the code (cool effect! I wonder how it was done) not modify it (I'd like to see how the solar system would be with a binary star; let me tweak the laws of physics and see how the universe would look like then).

It is free as in free beer, not as in free speech.
Bump .

Sounds like it got VR support too. Nice!
Space simulator...

Could have seen i've seen a good space simulator multiple times... One is a screen saver, the other is in an atari game...
I am necroing this thread. Hope it is not a problem.

Space Engine looks awesome for anyone interested in space. I personally would love to see it released on gog.

Sadly according to this post (at least at the time of the developer writing it), it looks like GOG is not too interested getting the game/simulator here:

I hope gog will take some actions in bringing the game/simulator here.

P.s. sy for necroing again. Just couldnt jusify crating new thread.

Cheers
If people want a free spaceship simulator for our solar system then I would have a look at Orbiter.

It's gone to Steam.

Depending on success there, it may eventually end up on GOG.
Remains to be seen, still making progress, but I think the .9.8.0 Trailer is still the most epic.
