Was wondering if anyone here has played Armies of Exigo on Windows 8.1 and gotten it to work? I've got the game on disk fully installed and I've also downloaded and installed the 1.4 patch. However no matter what compatibility settings I've tried (run as admin, force colours, force screensize, multiple different modes for the earlier windows versions); I cannot get it to run. The program simply dies as soon as the exe is double clicked.

Anyone got any ideas for a work around or solution save to wait and cross fingers that GOG gets a hold of the game one day for release.
Try DxWnd and see if that gets it to run.

my thanks for the link to the program - though its not having any luck at all (though there's a mind boggling number of options). If I try to test all I get is Error 740
The analysis mode detects "safedisk" running and a quick googling seems to suggest that microsoft disabled this in an update to windows 8.1.

So now I'm trying to see if there's a way to get around this disabled feature that breaks the disk copy protection from allowing the game to run.

So after reading around I think the safedisk element is only half of my battle.

I found this
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3086255/ms15-097-description-of-the-security-update-for-the-graphics-component

and

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/kb3086255-is-this-a-half-baked-solution-or-am-i/13d4c03e-f04f-40b9-b438-e903eda3cab9?page=1

I tried both the registry edit and the .bat method suggested in the second link, but neither made any difference. The game still simply refused to run at all in any form. I'm wondering if the safedisk element has changed since then or if there is something else going on that is preventing the game from even getting started

Have you tried a fixed executable (crack)?
It's usually the only way to play these games.

I haven't and wouldn't even know where to look to get a safe one that isn't virus loaded .

Cracks being loaded with viruses is a fairy tale used to scare off inexperienced users. I have used tons of cracks over the years and not once did it contain a virus. And you are in full right to use it. You own the game but aren't allowed to play because of a feature that is no longer supported. I usually use "gamecopyworld.com". Cannot link it for obvious reasons, but just google "armies of exigo no cd patch" and it should be the first result. It has never disappointed me so far.

It's worked! Which pretty much confirms its something to do with the disk security system that prevented it running. A shame, hopefully one day GOG can get the game here as well :)

On gamecopyworld, there are patched .exe files for versions 1.0, 1.2b and 1.4 (english) and 1.4 (russian). Did you pick the correct one according to the game version you have?

Just download the file and paste the downloaded .exe into where the game is installed, overwriting the original. Then try running the game.

I would need to check what I did way back (been at least a year since I installed that). You will need a nocd/cracked exe if you use a disc based version. Also you can find info at:
