For those who haven't played it, 'Star Control 2' (Now known as 'The Ur-Quan Masters' for the last 20 years due to rights issues. The game is also Freeware) is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time, and with good reason.

While not technically classified as an 'Open-World RPG' it fits nearly every criteria for such a game and back in 1992 did things that even now, are rare for modern games. While in a game like 'Skyrim' where you can start up a quest, leave to do something else, then come back months later in game-time and nothing has changed, you cannot do that in SC2/UQM. Events will have moved on. You can even start up a game and let it, 'Play Itself'. While things will, of course, end horribly, that still gives the game a sense of versimilitude that is lacking in many modern games.

So, after 32 years, the original developers of SC2/UQM are finally producing the sequel. Called 'Free Stars: Children of Infinity'. They plan to release the game here at GOG, but for those interested, they do have a Kickstarter up & running-

Nice to see that they're already hitting stretch goals. It would be nice if they would release The Ur-Quan Masters on GOG for free, as they did on Steam.

Thankfully it only requires Steam to download, but agree I hope they add it here.

It looks like this is what they are aiming for. GoG is mentiond as example of DRM free platform and the related goal is already reached:

Heard a Retronauts about Ur-Quan last year and have been wanting to play it here ever since, hopefully this prompts a release on GOG soon.

Well, I believe that Steam is not selling Star Control and Star Control II. I'm not sure it would not be in the interest of GOG to add that free game. At least, not for the moment.
And you could simply get the game from another DRM-free source with little trouble. The only difference would be that the game would not be part of your GOG library.

I hope this game makes it to GOG at launch, and that it is as good as we hope it will be. The Super Melee window looks a little small...
It now seems likely that there will be a GOG release. I just wish we could get more people to join in to reach the voice-over stretch goal.

Havent looked in a while. When does the kickstarter finish?.is voice over really necessary?

The Kickstarter is now in its final week.

If voice over is present, you can turn it off, if you want to. However, if not present, there is nothing you can do about it. I did play the original game with just text, and it was an excellent game. But the speech that was added to the 3DO version was indeed very well made. Thus, I would rate it "not essential, but nice to have".

An old interview with the creators.
