I think it's time Gog raised the white flag and asked the community for help. Since Linux is a crowd-sourced OS, it makes perfect sense to use the crowd to fix bugs —— and add improvements. (I'm sure they can add a procedure call to their special black-box add-on whatsit dodad for their own functionality, if they still need it.)
