I've got the game Pentiment wishlisted for one reason: I think it'll be an interesting game and by keeping it wishlisted on Steam, I am reminded that I find it an interesting game while I wait for it's release on GOG.

It's made by Obsidian and there's several Obsidian games on GOG, most notably of course Pillars of Eternity. Yet the game Pentiment, according to it's Steam page, is published by XBOX Game Studios. That has got only 2 games on GOG: As Dusk Falls and Psychonauts 2, as far as I can see.

With as huge a backlog of games and my wish for a DRM-free game I'm almost into 'Steam no buy' mode, yet how long do I have to wait for Pentiment to release on GOG? Will it ever come to GOG at that? What are the chances?

It's coming to GOG as soon as Daddy Phil allows it.
The Alpha Protocol re-release on GOG and the positive PR around it may help a bit, but if Obsidian really has no say on which platforms their titles go and are sold on it's down to Microsoft and whenever they permit Pentiment to be sold on GOG.

Because of Microsoft/XGS, I wouldn't get your hopes up, but unless you're desperate to play it, I'd say hold out for a GOG or DRM-free release. For games in general, the more people who can do so, the better the chances.
Around the same time we get Microsoft Urban Assault.

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division which as you may be aware owns Obsidian since November 2018 and thus likely dictates when and where Obsidian-developed games are distributed.

A couple of formerly Xbox- and Microsoft's subscription service-exclusive titles (including Pentiment) are going to or recently have been released on Sony's Playstation of all places, maybe that's indication of Pentiment also coming to other PC distribution platforms including GoG rather sooner than later too.

When Obsidian got bought up on MS, I asked them if this will affect GOG releases. This was the reply

Hello Mouse,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern about where our games are released. While we can't make any mentions or promises of where our games will drop, I can at least assure that our leadership teams will always advocate for releasing on as many platforms as possible so more players can enjoy them. Whether or not Xbox will listen to or allow that is something else, but we hope to continue releasing where we can when we are allowed to.

Thanks again for letting us know about your concern and I hope you'll be able to enjoy our games for years to come!

I honestly believe the will is there at Obsidian, so I still hold out hope
I recently watched The Making of Pentiment, another excellent documentary done by Noclip. Pentiment sure would be great to have on GOG. As a reminder, for anyone who feels the same, the wishlist entry is here.

Thanks for posting the wishlist entry. When I made this topic, I remembered I had at one time already added my vote to the wishlist, but I didn't look it up. Thanks for pointing others to the option of wishlisting it too.

Sure thing. In the case of Pentiment, I figure that GOG is already on it to bring the game here, but a show of demand is always helpful I believe.
