It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Navagon: But there wasn't an option in this case as software that does work with 10 through an upgrade install wouldn't work through a clean install.
Not sure what you mean by this. I do seem to recall something with DVD playback, but other than that, why would a program only work if it's an upgrade install and not a clean install?
I upgraded to windows 10 for few reasons.

Directx 12. I use AMD R9 290X and runing in windows 7 using directx 11 for games sucks ballz. Major performance hit. Using mantle is great but not all games use that soooo.. With DX12 microsoft is opening up the playing field for intel ATI and nvidia cards to work with game devs to build games that will run better with any hardware and leveling the playing field.

Tradition I have with MS OSes. I buy every second OS generation. Example, Window 3,0 no / Windows 3.1 bought / windows NT no / Windows 98sec bought / Windows ME No / Windows XP yes / vista no / win 7 yes / Windows 8 hell no and windows 9 i mean 10 yes. Don't ask me why but it works for me.

Can't fall behind. I like tweaking in windows files. I'll admit I'm abit lazier now than years ago. But I tinker with my OS to perform the way I prefer it to work.

The challenge of new things. Adapting and changing. I get bored fast. My windows 7 was running almost flawless. But it was becoming too conformable. I need bumps and hiccups from my system. Keeps my mind sharp and my body sexy.. Ahhhh I mean... oh nevermind :P

I haven't found a game that doesn't run on windows 10 yet. But i haven't tried all of the old one in my collection. I do see a performance increase with games in windows 10 over windows 7.

Theoclymenus: I have a Windows 7 laptop which was pretty much top of the range when I bought it. It is now probably as stable and performing as nicely as it ever has done

Sarisio: As people say "Don't fix what isn't broken".

There are no Win8/10-only games, and won't be for at very least couple of years.

Theoclymenus: How are older games (including gog titles) performing on Windows 10 ? I would hate to upgrade to W10 only to discover that half of my games won't work any more. Do you think it is worth upgrading yet ?
avatar
Sarisio: I have marked some threads, which have quite convoluted solutions to make some games work in case I will ever have to move to Win10. There is a whole mess with DirectX drivers and old DirectDraw.

In short: they work badly. Don't listen to those who play only couple of games and who see no problems. There are many compatibility problems, but performance gains are minimal if any at all.
Thanks for your helpful and informative reply.

I'm going to stick with what I've got for now since my computer is giving me no trouble whatsoever at the moment and I have a huge backlog anyway. Plus which I'm too old to need to "keep up" just for the sake of impressing my peers (who don't play computer games anyway).

It's a shame that this happens every time a new OS comes out though. I actually bought my first PC solely to play the awesome games which were available for it, Baldur's Gate (1) being the first PC game I ever bought. I never had any intention of letting computers rule my life. Life was one thing, computers were another - and solely to be used for gaming in my case. Then I got into internet banking, shopping etc. I sometimes wish I'd never bothered tbh. But gaming is something which I've never "grown out of" and it really pisses me off that every time a new OS comes out because it just screws gamers every time, until things settle down.

Wasn't always like this. There was a time when OS was user friendly.. Now its user hindrance. This happens when they're trying to push people for change. Or force it depending on how one looks at it.

Gnostic: I suggest dual booting window 7 and window 10 so you can see for yourself how good or bad it is and decide for yourself

timppu: I wonder if they have fixed the issue there was when installing Windows 7 and 8 side by side? Namely, the "fast boot" (or is it called "fast restart") feature in Windows 8 would slowly corrupt the Windows 7 partition.

The problem was detected already with preview versions of Windows 8, but at least it wasn't fixed yet when Windows 8 was officially released, because I ran into that problem as well. So I am unsure if it was ever fixed, and/or if Windows 10 "fast boot" has the same issue (if you have Windows 7 or 8 installed on another partition).

So just to be sure, I suggest disabling the fast boot feature in Windows 10 in such a dual-boot environment. It is disabled in the Windows Power Options, the option is first greyed out so you need to check the box which says something like "Show the disabled options" or whatever, then you can disable/enable that feature too.

When fast boot is disabled, then the Windows 7 partition should be safe from corruption, at least.

JMich: You can enable it on Windows 10 as well, by signing the driver.
avatar
timppu: Good to know, can you point to the instructions how to do that?
Yep, fast boot is just another gimmick of hibernating when shut down without you knowing so it boots fast.

I remember when Crysis came out and evryone was pretty much forced to buy a new computer (not cheap !). You didn't need to upgrade just one component part of your PC, you needed to buy a whole new PC. To make it worse, when you got your shiny new PC you discovered, to your dismay, that half of your old favourite games wouldn't work any more - at least not immediately and not without loads of immenseley irritating faffing about - if you weren't a computer expert, which most gamers aren't.

So it's here again. Windows 10 and the new generation of games, with flagship titles such as GTA V etc. I think I'll stick with what I've got for now. At the moment I think there are about 10 new games which my current machine can't handle. I would like to experience Fallout 4 but I haven't even played 1,2 or 3 yet. I'll wait.

Negatus: Sorry if this somewhat derails the current thread, but Is there a WIKI or something that has a comprehensive list of games that work / don't work with Windows 10? I've only been able to find sporadic forum postings.
Here's 's [url=http://www.an-ovel.com/cgi-bin/magog.cgi?ver=625&scp=gdspur&dsp=ipgfsorlcmbaxX&ord=&flt=oan~wxpwviw07w08~onn~w10~&opt=&myf=SatOct241924432015_45_IFLhuax42C]comprehensive list of games that GOG supports on older editions of Windows, but not (yet?) on Win 10. That's certainly not to say that these titles won't work on 10 for ALL users, but GOG (or, in the cases of the really new and upcoming games, the developers) apparently wasn't able to get them running reliably enough in enough cases to feel comfortable officially supporting them on 10.

I hear ya. I, too, long for the ease-of-use and complete lack of any need for technical know-how of DOS as my primary OS. With Windows 3.11 running on top of it. Those were the days when computers were really user-friendly!
