Hello,

My PC currently had 2 x ASint DDRIII 4GB - 1600 and 1 x ASint DDRIII 2GB

To me this adds up to 10GB RAM but when I run System reqs lab or dxdiag it always says I have 6GB RAM. I want to upgrade to 8GB for games so I'm wondering if I need to buy new ram or if one of the ports isn't working or something.

Sorry I don't know much about building computers so these might be stupid questions.

First thing you should do is check your manual to see how much RAM your motherboard supports. This could be the issue with only showing 6 GBs instead of 10. Or, it could be that if you don't populate certain RAM slots in pairs, then the RAM won't show up.
What information is available about the RAM sticks in your BIOS?

So I didn't build this PC, my gf bought it for me as a gift. Would they really put in a motherboard that doesn't support more than 6GB but then add in 10GB of RAM?
Sounds like your mobo might only accept RAM in two's and you have 4GB in one slot of a pair and one 2GB in the other paired slot. Mine for example pairs off slots 1 and 3 and 2 and 4.

No, probably not. Check out Smannesman's reply above. This is more than likely the issue.

A pre-built PC with two 4GB sticks and a single 2GB stick? That sounds... Unconventional, to say the least. I my experience, pre-builts always come with either a single stick (rarely) or 2-4 identical ones.

Can you give us the make and model of your motherboard?
I still remember how much smoother the original Unreal ran on my pc after my buddy and I decided to pool our RAM together into one machine - his 32mb and my 16mb :D
Thank you everyone for your replies.

I moved one of the 4GB sticks to the other open port and now it says I have 8GB of ram. I'm not sure where the other 2 went but this is a definite improvement. The way I have it set up now is

from left to right

Slot 1 - 4GB
Slot 2 - Empty (previously 4GB)
Slot 3 - 2Gb
Slot 4 - 4Gb

Is there any orientation to get the extra 2?

My mother board is ASUS and the PC manufacturer is ASUS but the emanual it came with won't open
I'm guessing the issue is that your motherboard is set up for dual-channel memory, but you have a 2 GB chip and a 4 GB chip on the same channel and as a result it's not using the 4 GB chip (RAM on each channel should be same amount and same speed, preferably identical modules). You may be able to fix this by just moving around the RAM modules so that both of the 4 GB modules are in the same channel (slots 0 and 2), while the 2 GB module is in the other channel (slot 1).

EDIT: Your setup should look like this.

Slot 0- 4 GB
Slot 1- 2 GB
Slot 2- 4 GB
Slot 3- empty

It's also possible given your previous setup that your second slot is just bad, so you may also want to try switching things up to:

Slot 0- 4 GB
Slot 1- empty
Slot 2- 4 GB
Slot 3- 2 GB

That seems an odd configuration to get the extra RAM to show up (Looks like you have dual channel mode with slots 1 and 4 as your channel - which is weird. Perhaps it's actually slot 3 and 4, with 4 only utilizing two GBs of RAM since there are only 2 GBs in slot 3. Odd) Anyway, do you know the model number of your board? If so, we can probably find the specs on Asus' website and see what the deal is there.
The manual of the motherboard typically says what RAM combination can be put into the slots. What motherboard do you have?

Already asked. It's an ASUS, but he hasn't stated which model number. And he has an e-manual, but said he can't get it to open. We're waiting for more info.
could you download and run CPU-Z and then make a screenshot of all the tabs?
We might be able to help you much better then... (The mainboard tab contains the model of your motherboard for instance)

Hi everyone,

Found my motherboard

ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. CM6340 (LGA1155)

One other question. I currently have a Geforce GT 620 (2GB) on this PC but it is not very good. Can I upgrade my GPU with this motherboard?
