I just got home from a preview-screening and, well...
This film is exactly what Emmerich's GINO should have been! Go out and watch it! It's absolutely worth the money!
With that out of the way, here are some of my likes, dislikes, and general thoughts, in no specific order.
Likes:
1. Godzilla is fighting against other monsters. Having only Godzilla can be fine (the original Gojira is my favourite film of all time, after all), but it just wouldn't feel right to me without him duking it out against other kaiju.
2. The finishing-move. I'm not going to spoil what it is, but it made me giggle like a maniac.
3. The CGI. When I heard, that Godzilla would be made with CGI, I was a bit worried, that it would too in-your-face. However, I think it actually worked out okay. It looked really good, in my opinion, and there are some gorgeous visuals.
4. The design of the other monsters. They look pretty nasty. :) Although, there is a part of one of the designs I find pretty stupid, but stating what it is would be a spoiler.
5. The characters. All of them seemed pretty likeable (or at least relate-able). None of them seemed to behave obviously moronic, but it's possible that I missed something.
Dislikes:
1. You don't see much of the early battles (but the finale makes up for that to a degree).
2. Not enough heat-ray.
3. The music. In my opinion, with a few exception, it's your general action-schlock music. I really miss Akira Ifukube (RIP). :(
4. Godzilla's new roar. It does sound somewhat like the original, but he only uses it maybe twice.
General thoughts:
1. Godzilla's origin is different this time. It reminds me a bit of the one from the Dark Horse comics. I don't dislike it, but it is certainly going to take some time to get used to it. Same goes for Godzilla's new design.
2. There are child-actors in the film. However, I didn't want to watch them suffer a slow and painful death, so I think they were fine.
3. I didn't pay much attention to the 3D, but from what I noticed it seemed okay. Nothing worth paying extra though.
Final thought:
I hope this move does well in the box-office, because it really deserves it.
PS: There is no after-credits scene.
