Right, I've made it. But how do I use it for best effect? Setting traps mid-fight hasn't worked too well for me so far.

During the Kayran fight there is a glowing spot in the ground before Kayran. You can plant the trap there using the action key without even equipping the trap (I think). Just be careful to not get hit by the tentacles while planting it. After that just lure the beast to strike it's tentacle to the trap.

That's how I did it and I don't think there is any other way but I never bothered to find out.

since i failed to get the trap, i had to use the yrden sign to trap its tentacles. worked fine though, beat it in just a couple of tries.

Thanks Urkkeli, that was it. It isn't much of an advantage over the Yrden method, it does save time, and thereby vitality... but I'd much rather have a shield against flying rocks ;)

Yeah, I went back there looking for the thing and got a bunch of stuff including some armor, but no trap, so I looks like I'll be trapless when I get into it with that thing.
