As the title suggests, I came around a pretty serious glitch/bug on act 1, specifically in the Kayran-Ostmurk quest, where I need to get ostmurk from the cave behind the waterfall. The problem is that I picked the herb earlier in the game and now it doesn't reappear making this quest impossible to finish.

Is there a way to complete this quest? Can I just ignore it and continue or the fight with the Kayran would be too hard to win? Is there no other place to get ostmurk?
Getting Ostmurk is not a required stage of the quest line. You can ignore Ostmurk entirely if you like. Or, if you already have it, skip ahead to crafting the potion.
You can create Mongoose without Ostmurk, which is the important thing.
Yeah, I was just exploring and found Ostmurk way before the quest asked for it. I grabbed it and later made the Mongoose potion from it, getting it early didn't break anything.

What, did you drop or sell it?
If you don't have Ostmurk, you can't complete the Ostmurk quest.

BUT you can still complete the main quest and you can still make Mongoose potion.

Notice that the Kayran quest says go get the Ostmurk or go talk to Sile.

To complete the quest, just drink a Mongoose potion before you fight the Karyan and then kill it, and then the quest should complete after that.
Thanks for the quick replies fellas, the thing is that I can't seem to find Sile (wasn't she supposed to be at the inn?) so I thought that because I accepted the quest from Triss from the potion, that I can't skip it until i have the potion

She's not inside the Inn, she's above the inn [there's a stairway outside] .
What Silver said ^^^^

And, you do understand that Ostmurk is an optional ingredient for the potion?

You can't complete the Ostmurk quest without it, but its main component (quebirth, vitriol, whatever) can be gotten from any usual source.

Hi folks, I have a similar problem.

I did the quest in order, only finding the cave and the Ostmurk after being directed there by the elf Cedric. I got to and collected the Ostmurk and the mission description under the mini map changed to 'Make the Mongoose Potion'.

However, when I go to my inventory or try to make the potion, I have the Mongoose recipe, all ingrediants but the Ostmurk. Does the potion auto-make itself if I now go to Sile, am I missing something or is this a bug?

Nice. A new wrinkle!

It doesn't make itself, no.

You have to meditate, normally that's Ctrl down and the middle button on that thing that appears. Once meditating, the top choice thing is Alchemy, pick that one, now you get a list of potion/bomb recipes you have. Pick the recipe, and you'll see if you have all the ingredients and stuff. If everything's fine, there should be a button like "Create potion" or something, click that and congratulations, you now have a potion/bomb/thing. To drink it, you have to meditate, but pick the choice on the right: Drink potions. There's a nice animation thing where he drinks it, so you know when you actually manage do it.

That is, if my memory serves me correctly regarding the details.

/edit: if you picked up the Ostmurk and can't find it in the Ingredients menu in your inventory, it's probably in the Quest items menu, but you don't need to know where they are in the inventory to use them.

He said he can't find it when he tries to make a potion or goes to his inventory. I take that to mean he knows about meditating, alchemy, etc.

I loaded a save and ran to the back of the cave to satisfy my curiosity.

1. The icon is a green bottle.

2. Its active element is Fulgar. (The red arrow one.) That should help you locate it.

If it's really not there, that is a new one on me. You can still make the potion, though. Just use any Fulgar ingredient you have.
Thanks for the replies folks.

Yes, I know how to make potions and Ostmurk is showing up in my Quest items but it is not appearing in the alchemy craft window. The other two slots are filled, but there is just a coloured shape where Ostmurk should go. There is no Mix Potion button either, just exit.

I know it's not a game breaker, but the perfectionist in me is a little irked I can't finish the path I chose. Not a big problem though and still a great game so far.
Ah ha! Sorted it!

Being a quest item I erroneously thought it would automatically be put it in the ingredient slot, but it didn't it placed some freaky green foetus thing in it's place. The Ostmurk was sitting to the right of the recipe wheel (which I never noticed until now - it allows you to swap out similar ingredients). Swapped it out, bought some Aether and Bob's your uncle. So not broken, just not as obvious as I was expecting.

For those with the original problem, once I made the potion the quest text went back to the original 'Find Sile or Ostmurk', so you don't need the potion to do the quest.

And todays lesson is 'Hover the mouse over everything' ;)
