I've enjoyed playing the Xbox 360 release of Crysis 2. It didn't have the cultural impact of the first Crysis, but it's a more polished game in many ways, and Cryengine 2 is much better optimized. It's amazing what Crytek was able to squeeze out of the Xbox 360's DirectX 9 GPU, essentially a Radeon X1800 XL. I'd like to play this game on the PC as well but I refuse to touch EA's DRM. GOG already has the original Crysis and Crysis Warhead, might as well add Crysis 2 and 3 and complete the trilogy.

I don't usually play this kind of shooters (run and gun and fun is my preference) but a friend recommended it to me all those years ago, and out of all relatively modern shooters that blended and melted into sludge of memory I remember this one still rather vividly, so it did something very right. The story of Alcatraz (I even remembered his name without looking it up!) waging one-man war against alien invasion might sound as nothing unusual but it was little details that mattered to me. I remember this game fondly and I would really like to be able to play it again on GOG.

The game starts off in 1940s New York, but spans a number of decades that mirror the events in the famous movie trilogy. Stages include Las Vegas in the '50s, where you execute a vendetta against opposing family hoods, a confrontation in Cuba, Miami in the '70s, and a final conflict in urban America in the '80s. Fend off enemy gangs and succeed at working towards piece with all the rival families.

It features 20 normal missions, ten new hit missions, a new rival family seen only in the new hit missions, rooftop battles, new favors, and other methods such as blackmail and bribery. The Blackhand Edition adds a second path that the player may take through the game, that of the operator. The main method of progression is by blackmailing police, the FBI or members of other families, and what the player does or says affects the outcome. While the enforcer's goal is to destroy the other families through brute force, the operator's is to blackmail the police chiefs of the five boroughs by finding enough "dirt" on them during missions. The player then blackmails the chiefs, enabling the bribe gauge to fill to the top for free every time the player talks to the chief, effectively allowing the player to take control of the police in that area. The police fight alongside the player's family members and can also arrest or kill rival family members. The path of the operator also grants the player additional tactical abilities that are not open to the enforcer, such as enhanced and regenerating health, the ability to call in the four-man hit squad twice as often, enhanced crew damages and health, ability to plant car bombs and make instant stealth kills, and reduced price on bribing on the police and FBI.

A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
