Frontier: Elite II (1993)

by Frontier Developments, GameTek, Inc., Konami
Genres:Adventure, Simulator
Themes:Open world, Action, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:Frontier: Elite 2 is, of course, the sequel to Elite and it continues in much the same way. You have a ship and limited funds, and nowhere to go but out into space. Trade, fight, hunt criminals, work for the various governments, anything goes in Frontier. There are few, if any, limits on what you can do or where you can go. And Frontier's universe (with approx. 100,000,000,000 planets and moons) is so big you'll never see the end of it.Show more

The sequal to "David Brabens" first "realistic" space-exploration, trading and combat simulation. Dozens of totally different space-ships, all earnable and individually equipabble with tools, equipment, weapons, cargo-bays, passenger-cabins and everything you can imaginably require on a multifunctional transport-, mining- and exploration-vehicle. Thouaands of star systems with own economies and dependencies. A game soo complex and varied, that AI will not be able to design something similiar within the next 500 years.
The entire universe on one disk. Simply amazing. I have spent many hundreds of hours playing this game. I still do this on my Amiga 1200. The creation of this game was the beginning of advanced strategic and commercial games in space. Plus a military theme, piracy, ranks, bribery, something fantastic. I know, Elite was the first, but it was Frontier that opened up space to us.

This is the game which allowed me to be a space pilot. I could fly around galaxy trading, mining, fighting or just exploring and created love to space sims in general.

I remember the first time I took off from a planet and thinking to myself "This is absolutely amazing". I spent countless hours just flying around space, trying to figure out the game all the while being amazed by the graphics and the game mechanics.

One of the few games from my youth thanks to which I could escape from the world around me and immerse myself in space.... The first amazing feat of programmers because, as I remember well, it fit on a 1.44 floppy disk and had an incredibly large area on which you could move. My Amiga is with me to this day. I remember this one unforgettable music that can now be found on YT “Frontier Elite 2 Main Theme Remake from the Uncle Art Film” and it still evokes fond memories.

I loved this game so much I couldn't wait to get home from school or say football practice/game to play it. But especially it helped me to get through those boring (school) days. This were perhaps the first ever game I ever played that had open world and where my actions mattered/had consequenses. At least it were first that I can remember that were not just linear (like Wings Commander though failing some missions had some outcomes), or just pure "run to edge of screen slashing enemies". I had no regrets I missed first Elite because of this. And I promise GOG, if you bring this game (and "First Encounters: Elite", pretty please!) to my PC with kb+mouse, no price will make me to wait for a sale, and judging from Elite:Dangerous community/forums I'm not only one.

I can't tell how many hours i spent on this game. Back to that time, i played on Atari ST. No GPU, no 3D chip, no 3D hardware, only 1MB of memory, 8 MHz. And this game, full 3D with rounded geometry, special effects, planetary landing, real physics, thousands of systems, billions of planets. I can't remember any other game with this level of gameplay, technicity, possibilities on the market. You know what ? I still have the (paper) User Manual :D
Frontier: Elite II is a mind-blowing space sim that feels way ahead of its time. The sheer scale is staggering—an entire galaxy to explore, with real star systems and Newtonian physics that make space travel feel incredibly immersive. The freedom is unmatched; you can be a trader, a bounty hunter, a smuggler, or just roam the stars. That said, the game isn’t exactly welcoming. The controls are tricky, and combat is brutal if you don’t master inertia. The missions are repetitive, and the economy can feel unbalanced. But once you get past the learning curve, there's nothing quite like watching a planet rise over the horizon as you glide down for a landing. It’s not perfect, but for its time, it’s a masterpiece.

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the FutureAt the dawn of the 30th Century, dolphins and humans had been together in a cross-species society for 500 years. Together, they had set out to explore space, offering peace and friendship to all who would welcome it. But space had its dangers; a violent species known as the Foe decided to conquer Earth. However, the dolphins and humans drove them to the brink of defeat, and so the Foe sought vengeance on Earth. The few caretaker dolphins who had been left behind on Earth were not entirely defenseless; they were protected by their creation called the Guardian—a gigantic, sentient being made of a crystalline substance which projected a forcefield over the entire planet. Undeterred, the Foe made suicide attacks on the field, searching for a weak point.

Until Dawn
Until DawnUntil Dawn is an interactive drama survival horror video game. It was originally scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 3 and feature PlayStation Move support, but in August 2014, the game was reintroduced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Until Dawn is designed to be played multiple times, as players will miss out on quite a bit of content with a single playthrough. Each will last about nine hours in length and the game mechanics utilize a new in-game system called the "Butterfly Effect" in which any choice of action by the player may cause unforeseen consequences later on. For example, locating a weapon in an earlier chapter may allow the player to pick it up down the line when a chase scene leads back to the same room. Throughout the game, players will make difficult decisions during ethical or moral dilemmas, such as sacrificing one character to save another. The Butterfly Effect system blurs the line between right and wrong decisions and it is possible for players to keep all eight characters alive as well as having all eight of them die, allowing for many different paths and scenarios as well as offering several different endings. Until Dawn has a strict auto-save system to prevent players from reloading a previous save file to an earlier point in the game if they regret an in-game decision they have made. The only way to change the player's choice is to restart the game from the beginning or continue to the end and start a new game. In a developer interview, it has been said that Until Dawn has "hundreds of endings". Different endings have different variations depending on the combination of characters alive at the end of the game. The gameplay is focused on exploration, quick-time events and discovering clues as well as making decisions. There is an in-game system that will keep track of all of the clues and secrets players have discovered in total, even if there are multiple playthroughs; these clues will allow the player to piece together the mysteries of Blackwood. In terms of the gameplay mechanics and theme, Until Dawn has been noted to be similar to Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. Until Dawn was met with a positive critical response upon release, with praise directed at the visuals, choice mechanic, horror elements, music, voice acting and gameplay design. Most of the criticism the game drew was concerning the story, mostly the second half, camera angles, character movements and partially linear plot.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake EaterMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the follow up to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It is the first prequel in the series, taking the series to the year 1964. The player takes the role as the series' original antagonist, Big Boss, then known as Naked Snake. MGS3 is the first game in the series to take place in a jungle. This unique setting created an opportunity for new mechanics. The player can adapt to the environment by swapping Snake's camouflage, hunt animals and gather plants for food. This iteration in the series introduced a new feature in which the player must apply medicine and perform medical procedures on Snake if he is damaged in combat. Apart from the survival themed features, the controls and gameplay of the game are very similar to Metal Gear Solid 2. Like other Metal Gear games, the focus is on stealth, but the player can go through the entire game like a shooter if they choose to. Throughout the game Snake acquires weapons of all types; non-lethal firearms, handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, and explosives. Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first game to implement the CQC (close quarters combat) system. CQC allowed Snake to beat enemies down to knock them out, or put them in a chokehold to knock them out, kill them, or and/or question them. Metal Gear Solid 3's health system required the player to occasionally pause the game and treat Snake's ailments. When Snake is shot, there is a chance that the bullet didn't pass through him, requiring the player to use a knife to remove the bullet, apply disinfectant, apply styptic and bandage the wound. This was done through a submenu in the pause screen. Other ailments the player must treat Snake for include: leeches, broken bones, burns, cut, arrow/bolts/needles, stomach sickness, colds, and food/venom poisoning. Adding to the survival elements of the game, Snake Eater lives up to its name by requiring the player to scavenge food for Snake. Under the life bar there is stamina bar. If Snake does not eat any food the bar depletes, causing various effects. When the stamina bar is low, the player's ability to aim is severely handicapped, Snake's hands will shake in the first person aiming mode. Just like real life, Snake's stomach can also rumble, enemy soldiers can hear this, and will be alerted to Snake's presence.

Hard Truck: Road to Victory
Hard Truck: Road to VictoryYou can choose to race with other tracks in two or three simple tracks, and there is a mode where you can just drive a truck to deliver cargo to your designated location. The second mode might be bit boring, since you do nothing but drive a truck and do nothing more, but it's worth it for two reasons - primarily the extremely beautiful landscape you drive through. It is designed with the utmost care and detail and you can really feel like you're really there. And secondly, the game simulates the job of a truck driver pretty accurately. While driving, you get to experience what a real truck driver feels and does on the road. Now, multiply that by a 1000 miles. But mostly, this is a truck racing game. You can change the view from behind the wheel to outside of the truck, whatever you like. There is also a good rearview mirror that helps you while driving. Overall, this is a fantastic truck simulation and racing game and you should try this one and the games sequels, Hard Truck 2 and the rest of the game's series.
