Hi all,

Having a problem with getting BG1 running using the "Newbie guide...if you buy BG1 + BG2 from GOG" stickie.

In short, I have installed EasyTuTu, the Degreenifier fix, the widescreen mod, and the unfinished business pack (oh and also put over the normal.bam from the TotSC CD over into the easytutu overide directory for the larger font) in that order.

So when I play the game, I notice that the fog of war flickers every time I pan the screen with the mouse. More specifically, the area that flickers is the area of the game world which I've uncovered, but has now gone out of my field of sight and is slightly shaded.

I found the solution to removing the flicker is turning on 3D acceleration within bgconfig. However, when I do this, the mouse pointer now lags terribly. It stutters across the screen, and is especially more apparent when opening new dialogs (eg., inventory, journal etc).

So I either have to put up with fog of war flickering or a mouse pointer lag (which is the worse to put up with).

I've also installed the latest 2014 Nvidia driver for my laptop.

Is there any setting I need to change to fix the mouse problem (either in my Nvidia control panel, bgconfig, windows settings, or ingame settings)? I'm runing Windows 7 64bit if that means anything.

Or should I just do a complete reinstall of everything (minus the degreenifier fix) and run it without 3d acceleration?

Thanks for any help guys.

Rung BGConfig.exe inside your BG2 installation folder. Tweak the settings, especially in 'Hardware'. And in 'Miscellaneous' give yourself a buffer of 768 MB. If none of that helps, in 2D & 3D options, try toggling off the 32 bit textures.
Hi Hickory,

Thanks for responding. I tried a few of those things you suggested, but to no avail.
When you say run bgconfig.exe inside the BG2 folder, don't you mean inside the EasyTutu folder? As this is where I run BG1 from.

After further checking, it seems the fog of war flickering is due to the widescreen mod. Doesn't seem to like 1366 x 768 where the fog of war is concerned. I did try a new resolution of 1280 x 720 which substantially eliminates flicker. Pity the mouse goes all laggy when I select 3d acceleration though, as the fog of war actually looks better.

Yes, of course. My apologies.

You know, you don't actually need the widescreen mod with TuTu. Just enabled the unsupported resolutions in BGConfig -- you don't need a resolution higher than those with a 4:6 fixed asset game like BG.

Also, you don't actually need 3D acceleration. The only things that you will notice any difference with it off is things like smoke, dust clouds, some spell effects etc. None of the other (static) graphics are affected in any way. I run without it, and always have. It's not necessary at all.
I think I'll do away with 3d acceleration AND the widescreen mod. After several configurations, I've decided I'm actually most happy with 800 x 600. Still looks good in the BG2 engine/gui, so I think I'll stick with this. I don't even need the increased font size at this resolution. Even though widescreen would have been cool, it still looks good. Funnily enough, even the unsupported resolution of 1024 x 768 within BGconfig appears to flicker. Must be something to do with the Nvidia chipsets or something.

Thanks again for helping. I'm now off to kick butt all along the Sword Coast with my dual class (eventually) Fighter/Mage. YAY!
