You can turn on some additional battle log settings that are off by default to get a LITTLE more info, but it still won't show you enemy HP directly. You can turn on the random number generator roll numbers though, so you can see how much damage you're doing.
As a new player, if micromanaging every aspect of the party puts you off, there are some pretty good custom AI scripts out there that have been put together over the years that really do help ease you into the game. These can always be turned on and off at will, too. The ones I've used for Baldur's Gate 2 and had a good time with are the e-series scripts available here:
