It took me a while to figure out how to get custom portraits in GNU/Linux version of Baldurs 1 enhanced edition.
You have to put them in:
$HOME/.local/share/Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition/portraits
You don't need to have three different sizes, nor that they end in L, S or M. The other rules must be followed however.
I found out of this starting the game from a terminal, then appear traces starting with «INFO: scanning:(». There are two portrait directories, but it only worked in one of them.
