I have a question. If you are dual classing what happens to your proficiency points when you get the first class abilities back?

Like for example: If I start off as a fighter and have four proficiency points in bows, Then I dual class into thief and put one Proficiency point into bows, when I get my fighter class abilities back will I have four or five proficiency points in bows?

Thanks

You get your old proficiency points back, but they do not stack -- do not put proficiency points into your second class that you already have in your primary class. In your case, your fighter/thief will end up with four points in bows.

Edit: just to be clear, you get whichever is the highest proficiency of the two classes if you double up.

Ah thanks that helps alot

Thanks
Hope I can use this thread to post another question about dual-classing.

Is it ever possible to dual class into a prestige class?

For example, if I would start off as a basic Fighter, will it be possible to dual class into a prestige thief, such as Swashbuckler?

I have suspicion that one has to start off with the prestige class, and then dual into a generic class, if even that works at all...

If anyone knows firm answer, this would be much apprecaited!

No, it is not possible without mods. As you say, you must choose your 'kit' at primary class creation. In the original BG1 you could choose a mage kit if you dual classed xxx/mage, but not in BG2. Even if you import a Thief/Conjurer into BG2, your conjurer status will be lost, and you will be offered a choice of thief class at import.
If you don't mind 'cheating' it in then you can use Shadowkeeper to set a kit for your second class (still can't have 2 kits so if you start as a swashbuckler then dual to a paladin, you can't have both swashbuckler AND cavalier).

You'll need to set the kit in the character tab of SK and also in the innate skills tab whose name I'm forgetting ('innates'?)
Make sure to set the latter to level 1 (for some reason, default might give you levels 1-40)

That is only cosmetic. The BG2 engine will not allow a secondary class kit to assign benefits (it's hard coded): you will not get extra spell slots at level up; you will not get AC/THAC0 bonus for Kensai, etc. Mods do it by adding effects by script.

Thanks all for clarifying. Fighter / Swashbuckler would have been a fun combo starting off as a fighter, and dualling during BGII - but maybe it is best for balance in the end not being abel to pick best of everything!

Really? Seemed to work ok when I tried it with Fighter->Assassin, but I didn't pay attention to Thac0 or AC (which is probably the same as regular thief anyway). But the 'poison weapon' increased as it should and the backstab multiplier went up by level to a max of 7x, as it should for Assassin.
I haven't tried it for other kits though so I don't know if it missed anything it should.
