I'm having trouble putting my finger on the reason, but sometimes my text-log window is 2 lines tall, and sometimes around 8ish. It's pretty frustrating to scroll through such a small window looking for something specific.

As much as wild surge spices up combat, knowing exactly what happened is kinda important. Playing BGT as installed with http://www.gog.com/forum/baldurs_gate_series/baldurs_gate_2_essential_mods/page1

That's a simple one. At the right-hand side of the log window, to the right of the scroll bar are two buttons. Press the top one to expand the window, and the bottom one to contract it again.

Wow, embarrassing. That's what I get for playing a dark game with background glare, could not even see those.
