Tale as old as time.

Bard's Tale IV: Barrow's Deep, is coming soon, DRM-free to GOG.com.
More than 100 years later, evil is back, as it tends to do. Pick one of four available classes (yes, you don't have to be a bard) and before you know it you'll be crawling through cavernous dungeons or the legendary city of Skara Brae, solving puzzles, bopping beasties in a turn-based fashion and having a grand ol' time. Along with your party and your shiny gear, of course.

Pop.

Awaiting goodness here :)
I really look forward to this one because it's been far too long without a proper Bards Tale game, i guess it still remains to see how similar/good it will be but atleast it won't be an subpar Arpg.

I've been waiting for 30 years for this, so might even consider a preorder on this one - which I wouldn't do for most of the games :)

I actually have gone further: I actually backed the game on Kickstarter. It's the only time I have done this.
It's a shame that as far as I know the first The Bard's Tale has yet to be upgraded to the latest version on GOG. Maybe for the occasion they will update it, otherwise I don't see why buy a sequel that could be abandoned as well.
I hope you don't have to play the previous games to understand the story and its world, I would probably never play those so a summary or something would be good. Also, why does this game have loot boxes? Looks like it does from the trailer.

Anyway, wishlisted for now, it looks decent enough.

I believe what you saw is just an ordinary treasure chest. In the original trilogy, whenever you clear a placed encounter (common, for example, after kicking through a door), the enemies will drop a (possibly trapped) treasure chest. You can have your thief try to identify and disarm the chest (if that works in the version you're playing), or you can just bypass it by casting a cheap Trap Zap spell, at which point you open the chest and get money (not actually that useful) and random treasure (which can be very useful, and includes such things as a Fire Horn that lets your Bard breathe fire like a dragon).

Also, the original trilogy isn't story heavy, so you don't need to worry about it. I will tell you that BT1 takes place in Skara Brae, BT2 takes place in a dream world, and BT 3 goes back to Skara Brae, but it's in ruins. (What's with classic WRPGs destroying a city called Skara Brae anyway?)

It's not really the first Bard's Tale game; from what I understand, it is best regarded as an unrelated game that jost so happens to share the name of the original trilogy.

Yeah, that's not Bard's Tale, it's an amusing side game that was fun to play but didn't count as something that should have the name attached to it.

This, on the other hand, looks like it's going to be a Bard's Tale game made for modern machines.

Now, that side game, it did have the first three Bard's Tale games included as bonus content.
Saw this on kickstarter and paid some cash hopefully can get a gog key and not a steam key for it.
sooo.... isn't the bard's tale game (the action rpg one) that is currently sold here NOT up to date? i'd love to say i'm getting this day one, but won't continue to buy from a dev who doesn't keep their software up to date. gog, have you tried contacting them about this? what's their deal?
