I bought a boxed copy of PoE from Game thinking it was stand alone, but it turns out to have installed on Steam. Are the White March Expansions from GOG any good to me or will I have to buy on Steam?

What is the situation in general about expansions?

Thanks

You'll have to buy White March on Steam. While you could, in theory, buy the expansions here, it will be no good as you won't have any access to the files themselves.

For a second I thought infinite9 was back in here. :P

You can't add GOG DLC to your account (whether by buying for yourself or redeeming a gift) without the base game on GOG on the same account.

Blimey someone who stills buys physical copies, even I gave that up a few years back as they are all just crap packaging for steam keys.
Thanks Grargar and Starmaker. I was afraid that might be the case, but frankly it sucks. when I buy a game its mine and the DLC should work wherever I buy it from. I shouldn't be locked into someone's walled garden. Imagine a car salesman telling you you could only buy alloys from him! You would think it seriously weird.

Well , Nightcrawler, it was seriously cheap and an impulse buy ...

Yeah, you have to read the packaging carefully. As noted, more often than not, retail games are really just empty boxes with a Steam key inside. Sucks, big time.

I feel your pain. I much prefer buying a retail copy whenever I can, but they're all tied to some internet service with no alternatives given. So much hassle in order to just buy and play a game.
