So, you just came here and have no idea what is mafia but you would like to know. For you there is a short summary of this game and this link to flash tutorial.

Game of Mafia in short

Mafia is a forum game with two teams - the Mafia and the Town. The goal of the game is for one team to kill the other. The game also has two phases, Day and Night.

During the Day phase all the players in the game discuss, and eventually decide on a player to lynch. The Townies try to deduce who the Mafia are, while the Mafia try to blend in while also casting suspicion on Townies. Each player has a vote, and when one player has more than half the votes, that player will be lynched. At that point their alignment will be revealed, the day ends, and the game heads in to the Night phase.

During Night, there is no posting in the game thread. The Mafia discuss between themselves, and decide on one Townie to kill. After a set period of time (normally 48-72 hours), The moderator then informs the player of who has been killed, and Day starts again.
There might also be Townies who have abilities at night, such as the Cop who can investigate other players to determine their alignment, or the Doc who can protect another player from being killed that night.

This cycle continues until either all Mafia are dead, or the Mafia equals the town in size.
(When the Mafia equals the town in size they "control the lynch", and as such the outcome of the game is no longer in question)

The Townies (~75% of the players) do not know the alignment of any other players, and through logic and discussion they must try to deduce who the Mafia are. The lynch is their most powerful weapon.

The Mafia (~25% of the players) do know who their team mates are, and must try to deceive the Townies and stay out of the spotlight. Their most powerful weapon is the Mafia nightkill.

If you are interested in playing let us know in this thread and we will PM you when new game is about to start. In the meantime you can learn more about mafia theory and read our older games - also see these links.

Hosting Rules

1. To sign up to moderate a game, a player needs to have completed at least one game on-site.
2. We currently run one game at a time. (Subject to change, depending on demand)
3. If one or more players officially state they need an extension before deadline, the mod should find a way to accomodate the request within reason (no more than 48 hours). If the extension is not enough the mod should find a replacement as soon as possible making sure this doesn't affect the other players and/or their win conditions (abrupt day ending and mod-killing should be avoided, if possible).

Hosting list:

1. Pookina
2. JoeSapphire
3. trentonlf

6. dedoporno

-----------------------------------------------------------

Game rules: - The following rules cannot be overridden by individual moderators.

1. Cryptoclaiming is forbidden.
(I'll get back to exactly what cryptoclaiming entails, but in short it is having everyone fullclaim in some sort of (preferably nearly unbreakable) code, which makes it all but impossible for the mafia to win.)

2. Betting among players is strictly forbidden.

3. Real Life issues and situations should and will always take priority over what happens in the game. If a player presents a real life issue as a reason on why they need a bit more time or are temporarily unavailable to partake normally in the game that reason should be accepted and respected by everyone else (including the mod). Everyone should always treat real life problems/situations in a gentlemanly manner and never try to make accusations or gain leverage in the game based on that. If these issues become too overwhelming the incapacitated player should inform their mod and ask for a replacement as soon as possible or if they are unable to do so the mod should take steps in finding a replacement for them. Everyone should be playing the game for fun and treat each other with the necessary respect. Therefore we shall always assume that every real life reason for inefficient participation in the game is 100% real and has to be taken as such. We shall also count on everyone playing the game to show proper respect and sportsmanship to their fellow players and the mod by never abusing this "free pass". If someone is caught taking advantage of everyone's good will they will be immediately allowed to find another place to play forum mafia.

I'd like to be added to the hosting list.

Also, a couple of formatting suggestions:

For accountability purposes, in the first post it might be an idea to mention who has access to TheGOGfather. That would be myself, Damnation, Vitek, and Baz at the current time.

In the links section, I'd suggest listing the games in progress first, then the completed games.

TheGOGfather: I'll add you to the list. Do you have complete setup? If you have game ready you can be bumped up in the list because as far as I know Vítek and Robbeasy have nothing prepared yet.
I'll need a couple of days. And a reviewer.

Also, how many players are feasible to get around here these days?

I put you before Zchinque but if he has some objections he/I can move you down.
You have plenty of time as G10 is yet to start and G9 will probably go on for some time.

Unfortunately not too much.
Game 10 start is on hold because 3 out of 13 players already play in 2 games and don't want to be involved in 3.
So it would be wise to wait some time before starting another game.

I'm willing to review, as I mentioned before you went AWOL :p

About players, if you're considering a game of 20 players, I doubt it would be too difficult to find the players, from what I understood, the 16 players in game 9 were found pretty fast.

Hmm, I might see if I can cook up a couple of different setups of different sizes, or a scalable one, or something.
I did have one idea. which I think should be great fun - although I have no idea how to balance it.

It depends. As GOGFather said, Game 10 was hard to fill but sign-ups started very shortly after Game 9. It usually depends on number of new players. Game 9 got 4 and so was easier to fill even with 15 players than Game 10 where there is only 1 new player.
I also noticed that if game doesn't get enough players in first few days then it has only small chance to get more.

Damnation: On game rules that cannot be overridden by individual moderators, I propose "No betting amoung players allowed" :p
Should be a given really.

Then why did it occur once? :p
I merely suggested it so that not even moderators can step against such a rule. And it never hurts to have unwritten rules written down - this way even newbies are well aware of this rule.

That was a joke... hence the <_<;
With December right around the corner, it's almost time to start summing up the year.

In other words, it's time for some Mafia Awards to be handed out! Woo!
All games that finish in 2011 will be eligible, any games still going on at New Years will have to wait for next year.

Suggested awards:

Best Moderator*
Best Town Performance - Player*
Best Mafia Performance - Player*
Best Town Performance - Team
Best Mafia Performance - Team

How would you guys like to this - a nomination process first, then a vote, or just go straight to voting?

Feel free to take this as encouragement to read over the old games, btw. :)

*I hope to be able to scrounge up $30 to provide prizes for these awards, but I can make no promises.
Suggestions for awards are very welcome.
