The year 2022 saw the release of 620 games on GOG, a record for the platform, to which we can add hundreds of DLCs, many demos and deluxe versions of games, bringing the counter over 1,500 entries.

So I thought it's time to try to elect the community's favorite games based solely on their release date on GOG. I've seen that there are similar threads, but none seem to focus exclusively on last year's GOG releases, so I hope I'm not doing anyone a disservice.

Given the number of games, I thought I'd create a few additional categories to bring out a few more worthy games besides the classic GOTY. Since it's a community awards ceremony, there will also be the best thread of the year and best ongoing thread categories. In the next few posts you'll find the complete list, barring human error, of all games released on GOG during 2022.

Here are the simple rules for voting:

2. If you don't know what to vote for a specific category, leave it blank; you can vote for just one category, or all of them.

Damn, looking at the list, I realize just how many good releases there have been in the past year. I was surprised at how much I've spent (had to figure that out for the survey thread since some theorized that your spending would play a role in whether you get the survey or not).

But I've only played a few games, and I'm kinda saving the best for a better time.. in fact, I think I've only played five of this year's releases: DOOM 64, Skyrim (not finished), NekoMiko, Flowers - Le Volume Sur Printemps, and Flowers - Le Volume Sur Ete (only missing one or two endings and the secret chapter).

Does DOOM 64 count as a "good old game" given that this PC release certainly wasn't a thing 7 years ago? Well, I'm going to nominate it anyway.

I could see my picks being quite different if I had had time for more. Possibly Amatsutsumi or Saya no Uta for GOTY.. though I have a feeling one of the Yuzusoft titles or maybe even something like Dead End Aegis could get high ratings from me. Higurashi is also an ongoing favorite, but it'd feel weird to nominate a single part of a series that's been around for a while now.

I would like to vote for None as the answer for GOG GOTY 2022. I mean that sincerely; if None is not a category, then I think it deserves to be made into one.

Shadow of War could have been GOG GOTY 2022, but it's GOG release was botched due to missing Achievements.

Skyrim also could have been GOG GOTY 2022, but it's release was also botched by the way of how the GOG version uses a different version number to the Steam version, thus ensuring that many or most mods will forever be incompatible with the GOG version.

Furthermore, I feel the descriptions as given in the OP are overly-broad and do not take into account problematic nuances such as the ones I've just described.

For example, the OP says "the community's favorite games based solely on their release date on GOG" but that kind of statement makes no accommodation as to the question of whether or not those games were botched releases.

Just because a game has been released on GOG in 2022, that doesn't necessarily mean the release has been a non-botched one. Thus, the conclusion does not necessarily follow that a good game released on GOG is still good after it's gone through the botchings it's received on GOG.

As an illustration of that: say my favorite game is Skyrim with the most popular & most downloaded collection of mods available on the NexusMods website installed with it.

But I cannot translate that into "Skyrim is my favorite release on GOG in 2022," since that massively popular mod collection that I just mentioned does not work with the GOG version, and probably never will.

So, for the reasons I've described in this post, I propose that this poll should be modified to accommodate "None" votes, or "protest votes," or something along those lines.

With how the poll is currently worded, IMO the questions are loaded questions, because they are implicitly assuming (quite incorrectly so IMO) that all games released on GOG are problem-free good versions of those games that all GOG customers are happy with solely because GOG released some form of those games, and that the GOG release version is equivalent to the same game's release on other platforms even though often it is not.

Note: I mean no disrespect at all to Alexim with the criticisms of the poll structure that I've given in this post. I know he means well and in fact he has often advocated in favor of resolving many of the issues I've brought up in this post.

The real problem is giant 'let's replace the whole game' style mod packs that pre-glue 1000 mods together, 50 may not work (but 950 do) but then people start saying "nothing works" because it becomes impossible to troubleshoot vs installing them separately. And some of those large Mod packs have previously broken on the Steam version of the game too after a forced update, so it's not a GOG release specific problem.
