Minimal HUD but optional choices for both, preferably with a hotkey. Full map with varying degrees of zoom, pinning, commenting is very welcoming too.

It's a good question, I think I prefer a compass, because with a minimap in many games I just stare at the minimap way too much. Specifically GTA or Red Dead are examples that come to mind.
