Darkest Dungeon. It's the best strategy / roguelike / turn based game I've played recently.

Yes, this game can be hard and punishing but its rules are quite simple to learn and understand.
If you prefer "not so hard and punishing" game I can also recommend FTL ("Faster Than Light").

Many have already recommended some great games. I'll add:
For the 4x Space style: Master of Orion 1 + 2, the classic, on a good sale at the moment.
For city-building: Banished, and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, also on sale.
Fun empire building (without quite the involvement of Civ games) -
the Settlers Series, especially 2 Anniversary, 3, 4, and Cultures 1 + 2
Some fun, humorous classic gems: Deadlock: Planetary Conquest, and Majesty Gold HD, both on sale.
Enjoy! :)
