the Xbox One X.

Not to be confused with the Xbox One S.

This is about as bad as the original naming of the Xbox One (where Xbox 1 used to be a way to refer to the original Xbox), or perhaps worse, as there *isn't* an alternative way to refer to the Xbox One S.

Why does Microsoft insist on naming its consoles in such a way to cause the maximum amount of confusion?

(I once joked that Microsoft would call its next console the Original Xbox; how would you *then* refer to what we currently call the original Xbox? That joke doesn't see that far off.)

(Remember, S and X sound very similar when spoken.)
Maybe that's what the console wanted to be called. Because that's what it feels that it is inside!!! Who are you to decide???

The console doesn't yet exist, so it can't *want* to become something.

Anyway, let's get back on track; why does Microsoft like to give its consoles names that seem to be designed to create maximum confusion?
You could say it's an even worse problem with graphics cards and cpus.

Graphics cards and CPUs are marketing done right. They aren't supposed to be of-the-shelf products. They're parts with part numbers; if you're buying one, you'r buying it for yourself and do research and budgeting. They also have brands and line names for marketing purposes to excite people into upgrading and keep their research within a brand domain.

The Xbone is a single complete appliance, bought without research and often as a gift.

That being said, Microsoft backed themselves into a corner. It's an "upgrade", not a new line of consoles, and it's apparently expensive as consoles go, so to sustain sales of other Xbones they need to keep the Xbone name.
I still think they should have called it the XB one R
I would have never known how X and S sound had dtgreene pointed it out. :P

XXXBox might even make me reconsider my aversion against consoles.

I've been the the XXXBox... you... don't want to go there.

And you DEFINITELY don't want to ask for Peaches. Or Destiny. Or Madame Hung Lo. DEFINITELY not Madame Hung Lo.

And the one after that will be the "First XBox", and then the "Original XBox: The 1st One".
Will there be a Vin Diesel Edition?

/lame attempt at a joke
I think what MS is trying for is:

X Box One X

XBOX
Microsoft just ruined Christmas for thousands of families.

'I asked for an Xbox One X! X, mum! X!'

'But the box says Xbox One, it's the same thing isn't it?'

'No mum, it's not the bloody same! You brought me the wrong console! I hate you!'
