Adam, I admire your efforts on promoting Linux and thanks to you, I have been using Linux Mint more and more now. Actually, I am now only using windows 7 for a few engineering programs that run only on windows.
This laptop is old and about 6 months ago I installed Mint and windows 7 at the same time (dual boot). I am using Mint 18.1 Cinnamon. Today, boot times are.
Starting:
Win 7: 4 minutes 50 seconds ( 290 sec)
Mint 18.1: 70 seconds.
Shutting down:
Win 7: 2 minutes.
Mint 18.1: 5 seconds.
Memory (RAM) Usage on startup:
Win 7: 1.5 GBs
Mint 18.1 Cinnamon: 0,5 GB
So far I can easily say that working on Mint Cinnamon is a lot more comfortable and faster than on Win7.
I also experimented on XFCE and MATE editions on VirtualBox (VB) and XFCE has an amazing performance and configurability. Cinnamon has some amazing tools tho.
I am not sure if you can use same desklets or applets for different desktop versions tho (like xfce or Cinnamon).
